Woman searches for missing dog
Joan Quintana is looking for a little lost friend, a shih tzu named Pixie who had four pups three weeks ago.
The dog disappeared Thursday when Quintana was outside her home on Peck-Wadsworth Road in Brighton Township with five of her dogs.
When playtime was over, only four dogs were in the yard. Pixie had disappeared.
Quintana searched to no avail, then sought help from another breeder, Cathy Schriver of Wellington. The two women hoped they could get one of Schriver’s dogs to nurse Pixie’s puppies.
Schriver has a shih tzu named Callie who had puppies eight weeks ago that have just been weaned.
After a little trial and error, the pair convinced Callie to care for the puppies, which were very hungry.
Quintana has been checking with the dog pound for Pixie, who is black and white and about 9½ pounds, and called the Lorain County Sheriff’s Department because she suspects foul play.
She’s hoping someone finds Pixie or saw something that could help authorities in the search. Without puppies to nurse, Pixie could get a serious infection, she said.
In the meantime, Quintana and Schriver have become fast friends. “I can’t believe God sent her to me,” Quintana said.
Schriver said she had seen Quintana’s advertisements and happened to call her earlier in the week. It was the first time the two ever spoke before joining together to save the pups.
“It was karma that I met her,” Schriver said.
Quintana asks that anyone who sees a dog matching Pixie’s description call her at (440) 547-4900.
Oberlin balloon lands in Pa.
Talk about long-distance messaging.
Sharon Pearson, who helped coordinate the 150th anniversary of the Oberlin Wellington Slave Rescue, got word from a Pennsylvania woman that one of the balloons from the anniversary festivities last month made it to the Keystone state.
Dory Alger e-mailed Pearson that she was in her backyard cleaning up debris from the Hurricane Ike-related storm when she found a popped balloon. A logo for the Oberlin Wellington Rescue 150th anniversary was on one side, and on the other side of the balloon was “Oberlin Rotary 70 years of service.”
Alger lives in Eldred, Pa., near the New York State border.
“Thought this might be of interest,” Alger’s e-mail stated. “Congratulations on your 175 year celebration. Enjoy.”
Pearson said the funny thing about the balloon making it that far is that there never was a balloon release. Some kids were playing with the balloons and a got free, she said.
Man warns neighbors of cat-killer
Resident Chris Munroe put up this sign at 238 Eastern Heights Blvd. in Elyria to warn residents about the deaths of two cats on the night of Sept. 24.
Munroe’s cat Ziggy and a cat owned by a family on Princeton Avenue both were found dead, and there was no indication they were struck by cars.
Munroe said her children Whitney, 11, and Darren, 4, are devastated.
“He was the best cat — he was so affectionate and would come when you called him,” she said.
Dave McClelland of Lifesavers Spay & Neuter Service said the description of the cats’ bodies was consistent with poisoning, but the bodies were not tested.
“It’s a terrible situation if someone comes home and finds their pets dead,” he said.
McClelland gave Munroe kudos for putting up the sign.
“It may warn whoever did it and got away with it that we’re watching,” he said.
NASA celebrates 50 years
You can tell these people are scientists — or work with scientists.
Look at the precision of the “50” they formed in a hangar at Lewis NASA Research Center on Wednesday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of NASA, which was formed on Oct. 1, 1958.
It took 468 employees to form the numbers.
Afterward, they had coffee and cake and recognized the team of employees that organized various anniversary happen at the facility in Cleveland and Glenn’s Plum Brook Station in Sandusky.

Elria residents:
You have a very sick individual in your neighborhood, that kills cats for the joy of killing. Keep your eyes open to bowls kept outside, as someone I am sure is putting the poisons out, (some common household stuff, that I won’t mention.) Its a painful death, and I hope the perve is caught.
