Prep golf: Four shoot in 70s as Elyria Catholic romps to Lorain County Athletic Administrators Association tournament title

Jerry Rombach | The Chronicle-Telegram

AVON — Elyria Catholic’s golf team saved the best for last.
Playing in the final area-wide golf tournament of the season, the Panthers shot a scorching 295 Saturday — with all four players in the 70s — to easily capture the 28th annual Lorain County Athletic Administrators Tournament at Bob-O-Link on a cold but dry autumn morning.
It was the lowest team score for Elyria Catholic in any tournament this season, paced by also a season-low individual score of 2-under-par 70 by junior Colin Coughlin.
Columbia and Avon Lake were tied for a distant second at 312, while Firelands was fourth at 318 and North Ridgeville fifth at 324. Defending champion Midview, which shot a 299 in last year’s tourney, finished sixth at 325.
Ryan Polk of Elyria Catholic took runner-up honors with an even-par 72 — also his season best — while Doug Baluh (76) and Evan Siwierka (77) rounded out the scores for the sizzling Panthers.
Reilly Bates of Avon Lake also shot a 72, but was beaten out by Polk for the second-place plaque in a tiebreaker.
“It was really cold when we started this morning,” Coughlin said. “But as the morning went on I got used to it. I think the course was playing easy today with no wind and dry conditions.”
Coughlin had four birdies, all on the par-5 holes, to go along with two bogeys, one on the fourth hole when he hit in the water.
“I didn’t have any long putts or anything special today,” he said. “I just played consistent and two-putted all the greens.”
Coughlin’s previous low this season was 73 in the Division II sectional at Mallard Creek, when he led the Panthers to third place at 314 and a spot in the district for the 10th time in 12 years. But Coughlin soared to an 86 under cold and rainy conditions in the district last week at Windmill Lakes as EC failed to qualify for the state tournament.
“This was my last golf tournament as a high school player,” Polk, a senior, said of his 72 on Saturday.
His previous low this year was 76, which he shot, like Coughlin, at the sectional tournament.
“I started off today badly,” he said. “I bogeyed the first hole and chunked five fairway shots early on, but somehow managed to salvage par. Overall today I was chipping and putting really well. I sank a 30-footer uphill for a birdie on the fourth hole. I really had no bad holes. I only had two bogeys all day.”
