Walk to support research on lupus
Local supporters of lupus research are taking a step in the fight to cure the autoimmune disease at the 10th Annual 5K Walk-along for Lupus.
The walk at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Lorain County Community College, 1005 N. Abbe Road supports lupus research and the Tri-City Lupus Project. Registration begins at 9 a.m.
The event is sponsored by Elyria Club of Negro Business and Professional Women Inc. Cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt. Call the Tri-City Lupus office at (440) 323-3742.
Benefit to raise money for teen, family
A benefit potluck dinner for the family of Christopher Beamer will be noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Lorain County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 54 Hall in Eaton Township.
Christopher, of Elyria, has been battling brain cancer for more than two years. He is the 17-year-old son of Deborah Beamer who works in the circulation department of The Chronicle-Telegram.
The benefit is being sponsored by Deborah Beamer’s co-workers. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. They are available at the Chronicle and by calling 329-7200. In addition to home-cooked food and camaraderie, there will be a silent auction, music and miscellaneous items for sale.
Co-worker Katie Hildebrand said the benefit is needed to help the family with the many costs related to Christopher’s illness that are not covered by insurance. Another co-worker, Carole Weegmann, said people who can’t attend may wish to donate to the Deborah Beamer Fund at any FirstMerit Bank.
The FOP is donating the use of the hall, said Lorain County Sheriff’s Capt. James Drozdowski, the group’s vice president.
The hall is at 36854 Royalton Road (state Route 82) between state Route 83 and Durkee Road.
Learn about behavioral interviews
Lorain County Community College’s Transitions group presents a discussion 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 13 about companies that use behavioral interview techniques. The event is at LCCC’s Entrepreneurship Innovation Institute.
Annette McIver, project coordinator at LCCC’s SkillsMAX Assessment Center, will present the workshop, which defines behavioral-based interviewing and addresses why employers use it.

Fashion show benefits YWCA
Fabulous meets fierce in the 51st annual Ebony Fashion Fair show.
The Runway Report debuts in Lorain County at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at The Palace Civic Center, 617 Broadway, Lorain. This event is a benefit for the Elyria YWCA Women’s Shelter.
Thirteen models will showcase the designs of the best designers in the world. Ticket includes a copy of EBONY magazine or a six-month subscription to JET magazine.
Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for students and can be purchased at the Elyria YWCA, 318 West Ave., Elyria, or Palace Civic Center Box Office at 617 Broadway, Lorain.
College planning night at EHS
The Elyria High School guidance staff and Elyria High School GEAR UP office are sponsoring a college planning night 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Elyria High School Cafeteria.
A step-by-step guide for the college application process and financial aid and scholarship opportunities will be provided.

130 colleges attend LCCC college fair
Lorain County Community College will host the 21st annual Lorain County College Fair 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Ewing Activities Center. The College Fair will bring together representatives from more than 130 colleges and universities from nine states.
“Ask Your Admission Questions” will be facilitated at 6 p.m. by representatives from Baldwin Wallace, and the University of Akron will answer admission questions. At 7 p.m., financial aid questions will be answered at “Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Financial Aid” facilitated by a panel from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University and Lorain County Community College. Admission is free.
