Dutch TV comes to Lorain County to get scoop on U.S. elections

Jason Hawk | The Chronicle-Telegram

SHEFFIELD TWP. — The Dutch want to peer under the hood and see how American elections work — and that curiosity brought a television news crew Saturday to Lorain.

Erik Mouthaan, a correspondent for RTL TV-4 in the Netherlands, said he was filming a two- to three-minute segment on the presidential campaigns.

The piece is expected to run sometime next week in front of an audience of about 1 million viewers, he said. RTL TV-4 is a CBS affiliate with studios in New York.

Mouthaan said he decided to come to Lorain to see the non-profit group Reclaim Lorain bus homeless people to the polls Saturday.

The effort was an example of just how high Ohio’s stakes are in the showdown between Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain. But it also showed how very pivotal is the battleground state in deciding the outcome of the race.

“Everyone needs every vote they can get to win Ohio,” Mouthaan said. “As Ohio goes, so goes the nation.

“We’ve always been fascinated by U.S. elections because the U.S. is the sole superpower in the world. In recent years, the Iraq war showed the world the U.S. is still a dominant force in world politics.”

The Dutch news segment also focused on early voting — an option that doesn’t exist in the Netherlands, Mouthaan said.

His crew also went to the Lorain County Republican Party’s headquarters in Lorain and followed party organizers as they went door-to-door in North Ridgeville showing residents how to vote by absentee ballot.

RTL4 isn’t a channel anyone here takes seriously. As an American living in the Netherlands for ten years you can trust me when I tell you that it will be yet another piece of information disseminated only to perpetuate anti-American sentiments. Mocking and despising Americans is one of the favorite pastimes here.

“Mocking and despising Americans is one of the favorite pastimes here.”

Hopefully that’ll change in November!

Did the Dutch mock America as much when Clinton was in office?

I mean before the Republicans brought D.C. to a grinding halt to impeach him over lying about a B.J.?
