Sutton supported, Kaptur voted against bailout

Brad Dicken | The Chronicle-Telegram

Lorain County’s congresswomen split on the $700 billion bailout of the nation’s wounded financial industry Friday. Both U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, D-Copley Twp., and U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, had voted against the first incarnation of the bill earlier this week.

Sutton changed sides Friday and voted for the bailout, even though she believed the bill wasn’t perfect.

“It’s certainly far from a perfect solution to the complex problems our economy faces,” she said.

But Sutton said the changes from the first bill, which includes more oversight and greater aid to the middle class, made it palatable enough to vote for. The first bill, Sutton said, wouldn’t have done enough to help her constituents.

“The trickle down effects I didn’t think were enough,” she said.

Kaptur said the bill passed Friday didn’t do enough to address the credit crisis or stem the tide of foreclosures.

“Nothing in this bill is going to stop people in Ohio from losing their homes,” she said.

Kaptur also said she was leery of how the bailout would be administered by the Treasury Department and the cost to taxpayers.

“(It’s) making the taxpayers absorb all those losses and putting the very department that did not do it’s job in charge of it,” she said.

Kaptur also said the bill contained too many unrelated items — such as a rum provision for Puerto Rico — designed to sweeten the pot and bring more representatives on board.

“There were $150 billion worth of items that were unrelated to the issue,” she said.

Betty Sutton needs to be voted out of Congress. It is evident that she does not have our best interests at heart.

All those that are so Anti republican…. Please tell me what this Democrat city, county and state have done for you? You seem to be the same people complaining about our Democratic mayor City Council and County Commissioners? What makes you think DC democrats will do to make your life better?

The changes to the second bill amounted to an increase of $100,000,000,000,000 more to the millionaire bankers. Sutton sold out. The tax portion was written by the Senate which is unconstitutional, it has to be written by the House. This bill was unconstitutional from the word go. Thanks Sutton for nothing. The millions of calls faxes and emails telling you to vote no didn’t matter, the bankers were far more important. I will never vote for you again.

The bottom line is that this bill stinks! As a republican, myself, I am extremely disappointed in this Congress (Democrats ans Republicans alike) for passing such a bill and in President Bush, who I normally support, for turning his back on the prinicpals of fiscal conservatism. Worse than the large deficits and even larger government this bill will create, by dumping another $810 BILLION in the economy that’s created out of thin air, as in not backed by gold or anything else, this will only force inflation up even quicker than what it’s already going. Translation? this bill will only make our economic crisis worse by leading to a WEAKER DOLLAR meaning the costs of gas and groceries will only go up higher leaving less money in our wallets. The thing that makes me angrier, is that Congress only passed it after it was burdened with $110 billion of pork. Just pathetic!

Yep Sutton did what she was suppose to do and that is, make sure those at fault get their big bonuses. They passed a bail out that is not going to help main street. Its not going to help anyone who has or is going to loose their homes.

If any drips down to Main Street it won’t start melting to drip down for at least 12 months, by then more folks will loose their houses. So how did it help normal folks?

Dirtdigger, how did it not help the common people? Do tell.

Well lets see hear, one of Bill Clintons little ways of getting out of things was to ask a simple question of defining words. Defined common people? Bet the average person making 30,000 or less wont feel a thing when the bail out breeze blows by them to the upper class folks.

Spidey remind me not to invest any of my money with you and your company. It’s not going to help Main Street and you know it. I really don’t think folks are going to run out now and buy a new car or try and get a loan for a new house.

I’ll sit and take the wait and see rout because there are going to be some members of Congress who will soon be on the hot seat. It’s a bail out plain and simple I don’t care how you slice and dice it.

I like how the media keeps reporting it as a $700 billion bailout instead of the $850 + billion that President Bush signed into law on Friday.

Can anyone explain that or is it just the media again controlling what the minions of dumbass Americans get to hear, read and think about?

I know, that I don’t even read enough diverse news sources but I at least am informed enough to make an educated decision this election cycle based on facts as oppsed to 30 second TV commercials or stupid talking heads on CNN…remember folks, TV is written with a 6th grade education level in mind.

Sad, so sad.
