Reclaim Lorain seeks city’s poor voters
Today, 100 volunteers will turn out Lorain’s most “unlikely voters.”

Reclaim Lorain, the local chapter of the Industrial Areas Foundation, will send out volunteers to pick up people from the Haven Center, Catholic Charities and
Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority and take them to the Lorain County Board of Elections for early voting.

Church vans will shuttle people in some of the city’s poorest neighborhoods to make sure they vote, and volunteers will continue to walk the neighborhoods to make sure everyone is registered.

“We no longer see the poor simply as objects of our charity,” said Father Bill Thaden of Sacred Heart Chapel. “They are our brothers and sisters, subjects of our ministries and potential allies in rebuilding our community.”

Reclaim Lorain will meet at 8 a.m. this morning at Sacred Heart Chapel, inside Trinity Hall in the back of the parking lot, 4301 Pearl Ave., Lorain.

Hispanic Heritage month program
A free Hispanic Heritage program featuring salsa music with Sammy DeLeon will be 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at South Lorain branch library.

All ages will enjoy salsa, mambo and Latin jazz music. Light refreshments will be provided.

An additional family program will be 7 p.m. Oct.14, and will include a free story and craft program featuring “The Bossy Rooster” and other stories, songs and light refreshments. Attendees can also make a colorful piñata to take home.

The programs will be at the Lorain Public Library main branch, 351 Sixth St., Lorain. Preregistration is required by calling the library at (440) 244-1192, ext. 246.

Lorain firefighter benefit dinner
A pasta benefit dinner honoring Lorain firefighter John Volak will be 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Knights of Columbus Hall, 4720 Oberlin Ave., Lorain.

Volak was injured in August when he crashed his motorcycle in Lorain.

Beer and beverages will be included for free, along with a $20 donation, and dinners will be provided by Dimacchia’s at The Corner and the Jackalope Lakeside. Tickets are available at Dimacchia’s at The Corner, the Jackalope Lakeside or the Lorain Central Fire Station.
