Oberlin College shuttles students to vote early

OBERLIN — About a hundred Oberlin College students boarded charter buses festooned with American flags and eagles Thursday to travel to the Lorain County Board of Elections to vote, according to college spokesman Scott Wargo.
The first bus at 12:15 p.m. had 40 students aboard and was about two-thirds full. All 57 seats on the second bus at 2:30 p.m. were taken, Wargo said.
Buses also will travel from Oberlin College to election headquarters in Sheffield Township today and on Oct. 9, 10 and 11.
Wargo said the college administration paid for the buses after working with student groups intent on helping to avoid long lines for students and city residents on Election Day.
Oberlin was plagued with problems in the past two presidential elections when people waited up to seven hours to vote.
Last month, Elections Board Director Jose Candelario lauded the idea of busing students to vote early, saying it might help alleviate long longs on Nov. 4.
In order to vote, Candelario said Oberlin students must have the last four digits of their Social Security number or the number of their Ohio driver’s license. Those who vote on or before Oct. 6 can register and vote simultaneously.
Candelario said ballots for those who register and vote simultaneously will be held until the board receives acknowledgment cards sent to addresses for the individuals who register and vote at the same time.

Is this kind of like a modern-day underground railroad, carrying the true believers to the promised land of change?
