Monday’s the deadline to register

SHEFFIELD TWP. — Time is running out for county residents to register to vote.Lorain County Board of Elections Director Jose Candelario said the final day would-be voters can register is Monday.
At last count, Candelario said, the county had about 196,000 registered voters, but that number could grow by 10,000 when the new voters who have registered since the March primary are totaled.
More than 400 people, including two busloads of Oberlin students, registered Thursday, he said.
The elections board will be open 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Candelario said.
Although no identification is necessary to register to vote, Candelario said voters will be sent a card to verify their address. If the card is returned as undeliverable by the post office, the voter’s application will be denied, he said.
When voters come to the polls, they’ll have to provide their birthday and either the last four digits of their Social Security number, their Ohio driver’s license or a utility bill to prove their residence.
After registering at the elections board, Candelario said newly registered voters will be able to immediately cast their ballots under new early voting rules.
The elections board is at 1985 North Ridge Road in Sheffield Township.
