Fire destroys Sheffield Township home

Stephen Szucs | The Chronicle-Telegram

SHEFFIELD TWP. — A family of five was forced to find another home Thursday after a fire destroyed the residence they were leasing and the contents inside.

Sheffield Township fire crews responded at 11:43 a.m. and forcibly entered the home at 2111 Harrison Ave. to find heavy smoke and flames roaring from the rear of the living room.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, but Judy Smith, who leases the residence with her husband, Mark, and their three children, said she likely would have laid down for a nap had she not paid a short visit to her mother.

“When I got home, I noticed that the windows, which usually have curtains hanging in them, were all black,” she said. “I’m just glad the girls were at school. It could’ve been a lot worse.”

Jeff Carman, who leases the home to the Smiths, lives in his own home nearby and said he had insurance to cover the damages, estimated to be between $50,000 to $75,000.

Sheffield Township Fire Chief Joe Bandagski said the home was a total loss, and the Red Cross was contacted to help provide shelter for the family.

Fire crews from Sheffield and Elyria Township also assisted in battling the blaze, which appeared to have been sparked somewhere in the living room.
The fire’s cause remains under investigation.

Smith said she fears everything the family owned was ruined.

“Our computer had all of our pictures saved on it,” she said. “Other things can be replaced, but (the pictures) can’t.”
