Hop a haunted train

The Lake Shore Railway Association is presenting a Halloween Train and Haunted Hobo Path.

The train stops at woods, where passengers can walk a  path and drink cider. Wear shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain of cinders and gravel. Costumes are optional; no flashlights allowed. The trip takes approximately one hour and departs from the depot at 46485 state Route 18, one mile west of downtown Wellington.

The times are 8 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25.

The fare is $12 for adults and $10 for children under age 12.

Buy tickets at the Wellington Station 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, or by phone during those times at at (440) 647-6660.

The haunted ride is not recommended for children under age 3.

Candidates invited to Oberlin

The 2008 Oberlin Community Candidates Night is at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at First Church in Oberlin. Sixteen local organizations are sponsoring the event, which is free and open to the public.

Invited candidates are U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo and Republican challenger Bradley S. Leavitt; state Rep. Joseph F. Koziura, D-Lorain; and candidates for Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray, Mike Crites and Robert M. Owens.

County candidates are also invited. They are Commissioner Lori Kokoski and GOP challenger Martin E. O’Donnell; Commissioner Ted Kalo and GOP challenger Nicholas W. Brusky; Prosecutor Dennis P. Will; Clerk of Courts Ronald L. Nabakowski; Sheriff Phil R. Stammitti; Recorder Judy Nedwick; Treasurer Daniel J. Talarek; Engineer Kenneth P. Carney; and Coroner Paul M. Matus.

Candidates for Ohio judiciary positions invitedare Joseph D. Russo, Peter M. Sikora, Maureen O’Connor and Evelyn L. Stratton for Ohio Supreme Court Justice term beginning Jan. 1; Eve Belfance and William D. Wellemeyer, candidate for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals; and James T. Walther for the new seat on Common Pleas Court.

Artists host open house

Deborah Banyas and T.P. Speer will have an open house noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Riverdog Studio, 13818 Gore Orphanage Road in Henrietta Township.

The husband-wife team has new artwork to show, and there will be a complementary wine tasting, snacks and a new batch of Riverdog Red Beer.

At the same time, Breuer Pottery is holding an open house at its facility at 47361 W. Hamilton Road in Oberlin. There will be wine, hors d’oeurves and desserts.

Blues legend Taj Mahal at Oberlin College

Blues legend Taj Mahal will perform in Oberlin College’s Finney Chapel at 8 p.m. Oct. 9.

Tickets are $15 for the public and $7 for those with Oberlin College identification. They are available at Oberlin’s Wilder Hall main desk, (440) 775-8102; at the College’s Central Ticket Service at (440) 775-8169 or (800) 371-0178; and at the door.

Taj Mahal began his career more than four decades ago with American blues. He has broadened his scope to include music representing virtually every corner of the world.

FAVA offers classes

Firelands Association for the Visual Arts is offering juggling (Sunday and Oct. 10, 12 and 17); poi spinning on Oct. 19. 24. 26 and 31; bo staff on Nov. 2, 7, 9, 14 and sphere manipulation, also known as contact juggling, Nov. 16, 21, 23, 30.

All ages are welcome, and the courses cost $50 each or $40 for FAVA members. The drop-in rate for any one class is $15.

For after-school programming, sign up for Art After School I with Donna Coleman for kindergarten through second-graders.

The class meets 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Fridays until Dec. 12. Art After School II for third- to fifth-graders meets Thursdays 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. until December. Cost is $90 or $80 for FAVA members.

FAVA also is launching a campaign that challenges the mainstream perception of waste and encourages people to come up with creative alternatives.

Stone Soup, with David Brown, is Wednesdays and Fridays 6:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 15 to Dec. 5, ages 13 and up. Cost is $100 or $90 for FAVA members.

Wellington cows go to Kentucky

Patrick Twining of Wellington will exhibit two head of Holstein in the dairy division of the 35th annual North American International Livestock Expositon Nov. 8 to 21 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.

Enter charity scarecrow contest

Artists are assembling projects for the East Oberlin Nursery Charity Scarecrow Contest Oct. 10 to 12.

Scarecrows will be in place by noon Oct. 9 at the nursery at 43974 state Route 511 in New Russia Township. Voting starts at noon Oct. 10 and ends at 1 p.m. on Oct. 12. The 10 winning scarecrows will be auctioned off at 2 p.m. Oct. 12.

Vo-ag students compete today

About 120 Vocational Agriculture students from six counties and 20 schools districts will descend on the Izaak Walton Conservation Farm at 21334 Foster Road in Wellington today for district competition in a land and soils judging contest.

Sudents are tested on knowledge of soils, conservation and the use of soil survey reports to be better able to determine proper land use for farming, woodland and wildlife management and urban development purposes. Winning teams will go on to state competition.
