Youths raising money for Ike victims

ELYRIA — Three local youths are relying on an old staple to raise money to help those affected by Hurricane Ike.
Bryan Tenorio, 14, Alex Amos, 9, and Karissa Gilliam, 8, are knocking on doors in the Cortland Street area, trying to sell Avon products. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Salvation Army in Texas.
Erica Gilliam, who is Bryan’s mother, Alex’s sister and Karissa’s stepmother, said she and the kids worked together to figure out a way to raise funds for those in need. The kids picked the Salvation Army in Texas after seeing the effects of the storm.
“We thought Texas was the worst one,” Karissa Gilliam said. “We saw pictures of the bad things that happened there.”
Erica Gilliam was happy to find that Avon, whose products she sells, offers a list of items such as makeup, lotion and body spray that can be sold at a discount for fundraising.
For every dollar of product sold, Gilliam’s family will earn 50 cents to send to the Salvation Army.
The kids started going door-to-door on Sunday and already have $50 of profit to pass along.
“I like to go out and help other people, and talk to people door-to-door,” Bryan said. “If I had enough money, I’d donate.”
