St. Mary’s hosts dance, raffles car

St. Mary Church in Elyria will turn its church hall into a happening place on Oct. 18 when the church hosts a ’50s and ’60s dance.

Come dressed for the night in your best ’50s and ’60s apparel — poodle skirts, saddle shoes, bowling shirts and hot pants — and stay for a ’50s-style dinner. The evening will include prizes and music by The Geezecats.

There will be a drawing for a 2008 red Corvette convertible.

Tickets are $15 per person. For dance tickets or Corvette raffle tickets, call Joan at (440) 458-4689, or Linda at (440) 322-9704.

Holly Jackson has been elected Phi Theta Kappa president of the local international honor society for two-year colleges. Phi Theta Kappa membership is based on academic achievement.

Jackson of Elyria is the daughter of Robert Apple and Pamela Coleman, and is married to Melvin L. Jackson III of Elyria. She is majoring in business at Lorain County Community College and is planning to transfer to Cleveland State University.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is the largest honor society in America.

Fire department raises money for MDA

Elyria firefighters’ union Local 474 dedicated many hours to the Muscular Dystrophy Association Fill-the-Boot campaign this summer, collecting thousands for “Jerry’s kids.”

Elyria held a Fill-the-Boot drive in August and September and raised more than $5,500 for MDA. The International Association of Fire Fighters is a longtime friend and supporter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. All proceeds benefit the Northeast Ohio chapter of MDA.

Races benefits women’s services

Lace up your tennis shoes, put the baby in the jogging stroller and get ready to walk to support the Cornerstone Among Women facility.

The annual 2-mile walk on Oct. 11 is one of the center’s largest fundraisers of the year. This family-friendly event features live music, food and face painting for the kids, a magician and prizes including T-shirts, travel mugs and hoodies.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and the walk kicks off at 9 a.m. at Cornerstone Among Women at 364 Griswold Road near Midway Mall.

The LifeWalk event funds the free services provided by the center, including confidential counseling, referrals, pregnancy screening tests, limited ultrasounds, parenting classes and Life Ed U material assistance.

To register for the walk or pledge, visit www.cornerstoneamongwomen.org, or call Barb Einfalt at (440)284-1010.  Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has pledged matching funds for the event.
