North Ridgeville basketball star Drew McGhee commits to Miami of Ohio

NORTH RIDGEVILLE — Although he hasn’t officially signed a letter of intent, which will come in the middle of November, North Ridgeville senior Drew McGhee — the Rangers’ premier 6-foot-11 pivot man — has given his verbal commitment to the Mid-American Conference’s Miami of Ohio.
“It’s a real load off my mind,” McGhee said. “Now I can concentrate on my schoolwork without all the phone calls and now I can relax, and play basketball more relaxed without all the pressure of impressing scouts.”
Miami won out over Penn State of the Big Ten, Davidson of the Southern Conference and Stanford of the Pac-10. He received offers from several other MAC schools before narrowing his choices to those four.
McGhee, who has a 4.1 GPA, rejected Stanford, even though they were offering an academic scholarship, to stay close to home. The final choice came down to the Nittany Lions and the RedHawks.
“The toughest part of the whole process was when I called the coaches to tell them that I was turning them down,” McGhee said. “Overall the most important thing was that I really felt comfortable at Miami. They have an amazing campus and the coaches are a lot of nice guys.
“The recruiting class for my year was amazing with the four other players. They are all great players. Miami has always been a powerhouse in the conference and although they had a down year last year they’ve always been strong in the conference.”
Although the choice was McGhee’s to make, his parents Ron and Lisa are quite happy with his choice.
“Now they will be able to come and see me play and not have to make long trips,” he said.
