School levy survey
A 3.86-mill emergency renewal levy for the Avon Lake Schools will appear on the November ballot, and district leaders want to know what residents think about it.
A simple two-question survey has been posted on the school district’s Web site at www.avonlakeschools.
com/district, and can be found near the bottom of the menu on the left-hand side of the page.
The levy was originally passed in 2001 and will raise $3.4 million per year if renewed again by voters this fall. It is expected to meet the educational needs of Avon Lake students for the next 10 years.
Bandarama
Avon Lake High School will hold is 44th annual Bandarama starting with a parade of bands at 7:15 p.m. Saturday at the school’s Memorial Stadium.
The first of seven high school bands will take the field at 7:30 p.m. More than 600 musicians and auxiliary members are expected to participate.
Performers will include the Avon Mighty Eagles, Clearview Clippers, Columbia Raiders, Fairview Warriors, Lakewood Rangers and Padua Franciscan Bruins marching bands — and, of course, the Avon Lake Marching Eagles.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens. The gates will open for tickets sales at 5:30 p.m.
Concessions will also be open and there will be a 50/50 raffle. For $1, you can also buy a friendly message to band members over the loudspeaker. The
messages will be read during a 20-minute intermission.
Meeting to discuss high-speed rail
A high-speed commuter rail that could one day run through the county will be the topic of a luncheon conference Sept. 24 at Swingos Grand Tavern, 32858 Walker Road in Avon Lake.
The event will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is hosted the North Coast Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Brian McCann, representing the Northern Ohio Commuter Rail Coalition, will be the guest speaker. He’ll talk about the proposed high-speed rail line that would run through Sheffield, Sheffield Lake, Avon and Avon Lake. For business members, this transportation innovation could have a significant developmental impact.
Tickets are $15 per person, payable by cash or check at the door. It is not necessary to be a Chamber member to attend this event, but a reservation is required. Contact Sharon Matthews at sharon@northcoastchamber.com or call the chamber office at (440) 933-9311.
Cancer fundraiser
A fundraiser will be 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday to benefit 6-year-old Michael Sparkman, who was diagnosed in April with advanced stage IV lymphoblastic B-cell lymphoma. The event will be at The Little Gym, 2100 Center Road Suite. L, Avon.
After Michael started limping this spring, an orthopedist took X-rays and found spurring in Michael’s knee joints and a hole in his left knee growth plate. A tumor specialist ran tests and found the growths were malignant.
An MRI showed the cancer had spread to his entire body. Michael has been at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Cancer Center since July.
The fundraiser, which is aimed at children, will help the Sparkman family as Michael fights the cancer. Tickets are $15 per child, but larger donations will be accepted.
There will be games, crafts and snacks for children 10 months to 12 years old. Children younger than 3 must be accompanied through all activities by an adult.Registration forms can be found online at www.michaelsteam.org. Send registrations and payment to Karla Espey, 36412 Montrose Way, Avon, OH 44011.

For the Band-O-Rama it’s Avon Lake Marching Shoremen…not Eagles.
