Green Circle Growers get greener

CAMDEN TWP. — A local greenhouse is one of three
Green Circle Growers, located at U.S. Route 20 and state Route 511 just south of Kipton, was awarded $287,445 to buy technology that will help cut natural gas use, according to Meghan Dubyak, a spokeswoman for the office of Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).
Greg Lam, a consultant with the firm Viability, helped Green Circle Growers get the grant. He said it will be used to buy a retractable energy curtain — like large, automated window shades — that will help retain solar heat in greenhouses.
The curtain will be used on about 10 or 12 acres of greenhouses at the company’s 80-acre site, cutting energy consumption for heating in those buildings by 43 percent, said Norman Baxter, chief financial officer at Green Circle Growers.
“It allows you to capture heat and keep it inside so it doesn’t dissipate in the cold nights we have,” he said.
