WELLINGTON — If you love old machinery, don’t miss the 38th LaGrange Engine Show Sept. 19-21 at the Lorain County Fairgrounds.
Up to 3,000 people are expected throughout the weekend, according to LaGrange Engine Club President Jim Schmitkons.
He said every year, people seem to get a big kick out of watching the threshing of wheat by a steam engine from 1910.
Steam engines also provide the power for the saw mill and the club’s drag saw and shingle mill will be working.
Portable devices used to power pumps, corn shellers, grinders, washing machines and other labor-saving devices before electric motors also will be demonstrated.
“People like to see the old equipment running,” Schmitkons said. “We pretty much fill up the fairgrounds.”
This year, Allis Chalmers tractors will be featured, along with Nelson Brothers engines.
The hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 19 and 20. Activities Sept. 21 begin at 9 a.m. following the 8:30 a.m. church service, and the show closes at 3 p.m.
On Sept. 19, there will be lots of demonstrations, and all of the steam whistles will blow at noon.
On Sept. 20, the Bill Benton Memorial Antique Tractor Pull begins at 10 a.m. Participation requires a LaGrange Engine Club membership costing $5 and weigh-in begins at 9 a.m.
The consignment auction begins at 11 a.m. and the parade of equipment takes place at 2 p.m. in front of the grandstand.
On Sept. 21, the Farm Tractor Games begin at 10 a.m. in front of the grandstand, and the K-9 Companion 4-H Dog Club will put on a demonstration at 2 p.m. in front of the grandstand.
There will be displays by the Lorain County Vintage Motor Scooter Club, and the American Truck Historical Society will feature the big haulers of the past.
The Commodore Perry Club of the Antique Automobile Club of America presents vintage cars behind the grandstand, and the Lorain County Wood Carvers are in Building 14 across from the entrance to the infield.
A toy show will be held in Floral Hall.
On Setp. 19 and 20 only, the American Indian Motorcycle Club will display a collection of bikes from the 2006 Anthony Hopkins film “The World’s Fastest Indian.”
Admission is $3, and children 12 and younger get in free with an adult. Exhibitors can enter free through the main gate only.
The LaGrange Engine Club will register your equipment and give you a gate pass. You can also become a member for $5 and purchase club items and look at models.
A flea market with more than 125 vendors is open all three days featuring engine and farm-related items.
