Volleyball 2008: Team capsules, top teams, players, matches and more

Steve Byrne | The Chronicle-Telegram

NORTHEAST OHIO CONFERENCE

Elyria Pioneers

COACH: Jodie Johnson, 2nd year
2007 RECORD: 16-7 (7-3 Valley)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (4): Sarah Bracey, Sr., S; Amanda Medvetz, Sr., OH; Bridgette Jones, Jr., MH; Kristen Boros, So., OH.
NEWCOMERS: Jacque Hawes, Sr., MH; Courtney Jones, Sr., DS-S; Jazmyn Corlew, Jr., OH; Brittany Perrott, Jr., DS.
SCOUTING REPORT: With
All-NOC, All-Lorain County,
all-district Medvetz (265 kills in ’07) and up-and-coming star Boros, the Pioneers are set on the outside. Elyria needs to improve ball control if it wants to do better than a
third-place finish in the NOC Valley.

NORTH COAST LEAGUE

Elyria Catholic Panthers

COACH: Kim Watson, 7th year
2007 RECORD: 10-12 (6-7)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (7): Lindsie Everett, Sr., DS; Erin Kretovics, Sr., MH; Katherine McNeely, Sr., OH; Katie Wetzel, Sr., L; Theresa Krosse, Jr., S; Brianna Roldan, Jr., OH; Zoe Zwegat, Jr., MH.
NEWCOMERS: Chelsea Gentry, Jr., DS; Anna McNeely, So., OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: The Panthers are in a strong conference, traditionally dominated by Lake Catholic and Padua, which are strong again this year. It will be difficult for EC to join that bunch, but a winning record and a few postseason wins would make a good year. Teamwork and communication are strengths. The serving needs to improve.

LAKE ERIE LEAGUE

Admiral King Admirals

COACH: Terry Traut, 3rd year
2007 RECORD: 2-17
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (3): Dominique Higginbotham, Sr., OH; Lindsey Wilson, Sr., S-MH; Shakyla Legard, Jr., MH.
NEWCOMERS: Jade Blair, Jr., S; Anna Britvec, Jr., UT; Asia Chisholm, Jr., DS; Brittany Duff, Jr., OH; Iesha Holley, Jr., S-OH; Alyssa Montgomery, Jr., DS; Jasmine Myrick, Jr., OH; Ashley Neely, Jr., UT; Deidre Noble, Jr., MH.
SCOUTING REPORT: The talent is in the 10-member junior class. Higginbotham, who led the Admirals in kills and digs as a sophomore, is back after taking a year off. Defense is a strength. Ball control isn’t there yet. Traut believes his team can compete for an LEL Erie Division title, but must do better in non-league matches.

Southview Saints

COACH: Tom Price, 2nd year
2007 RECORD: 13-10 (4-4)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (6): Gina Lurry, Sr., OH; Christine Parker, Sr., OH; Danielle Reddinger, Sr., DS-L; Maredeth Robinson, Sr., OH-S; Amanda Zimmerman, Jr., MH; Shanique Ogle, So., OH.
NEWCOMERS: Erika Riviera, So., DS-L; Jasmen Szuch, So., MH; Megan Rosario, So., S.
SCOUTING REPORT: Ogle is an outstanding athlete, but at 5-feet-10 she’s the tallest girl on an otherwise small team. The team chemistry is good. As long as the Saints play together and avoid injuries, good things can happen.

PATRIOT ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

STARS DIVISION

Black River Pirates

COACH: Courtney Dieter
2007 RECORD: 5-18 (0-13)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (6): Carissa Delewski, Sr., OH; Cassie Hall, Sr., UT; Emily Sipes, Sr., S; Liz Guilford, Jr., MH; Kelly Hozan, So., OH; Cassondra Zumack, So., MH.
NEWCOMERS: Megan Holly, So., DS; Holly Jaycox, So., S-OH; Taylor Goff, Fr., S; Ashley Wine, Fr., L.
SCOUTING REPORT: Dieter says this is the most athletic team she has coached. What it needs is consistency. Sipes, a three-year veteran, gives the Pirates a strong floor general.

Brookside Cardinals

COACH: Ted Whitsel, 9th year
2007 RECORD: 19-5 (10-3)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (7): Ali Gendron, Sr., OH; Steffany Seiler, Sr., MH; Brianne Skolnicki Sr., OH; Tina Giusti, Jr., OH; Kayla Lee, Jr., MH; Kyleigh Whitsel Jr., S; Amber Wiley, Jr., L.
NEWCOMERS: Maggie Andorka, Jr., OH; Nicole Stevens, Jr., DS; OH; Clare Brezinski, So., OH; Salena Kauffman, So., DS-S; Julie Andorka Fr., OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: Brookside had its best record ever in 2007 and there is no reason to think the Cardinals can’t do better this year. Four players are working on their third letters. Gendron (368 kills in ’07) was first-team All-PAC, all-county and all-district. Whitsel was All-PAC and all-county second team. Defense needs better consistency.

Keystone Wildcats

COACH: Jim Horvath, 1st year
2007 RECORD: 21-2 (13-0)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (8): Jocelyn Andersen, Sr., S; Erin Gallagher, Sr., MH; Rachel Hasel, Sr., OH; Chloe Irish, Sr., NH; Amy Ricciardi, Sr., DS; Vanessa Wilson, Sr., DS; Kim Kokoski, Jr., DS; Casidy Gregory, So., OH.
NEWCOMERS: Nicky Eibon, Sr., DS; Melanie Brine, Jr., OH; Ashley Lenzer, Jr., S; Samantha Watts, Jr., OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: Keystone lost All-Ohio Kari Kincannon and longtime coach Dave Cross, but there’s talent back for the Wildcats’ rookie coach. The ’Cats are deep, experienced and have two fine hitters in Irish and Gregory. If Andersen can do the setting chores as well as departed Krysten Johnson, Keystone could claim another PAC championship.

Wellington Dukes

COACH: Marsha Coultrip, 30th year
2007 RECORD: 14-10 (7-6 PAC)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (4): Morgan Brasee, Sr., S; Callie McConnell, Sr., MH; Megan Auble, Jr., OH; Melissa Rennie, Jr., OH.
NEWCOMERS: Rachel Cook, Jr., OH-S; Hillary Markle, Jr., UT; Shelby Monschein, Jr., OH; Katie Stumphauzer, Jr., MH; Rachel Suydam, Jr., MH; Sarah Fahler, So., OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: Wellington won sectional titles 12 times in a 13-year stretch, but hasn’t gotten one since 2004. There’s good volleyball skill on this year’s team, but depth could be an issue.

STRIPES DIVISION

Clearview Clippers

COACH: Dave Dorinski
2007 RECORD: 6-16 (3-10)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (7): Jessica Dziak, Sr., S; Cybrenna Kimbrough, Sr., MH; Kristen Marcucci, Sr., MH; Alexis Pastor, Sr., OH; Sally Roule, Sr., L; Briana Shullick, Sr., OH; Jody Zellers, Sr., MH; Jasmine Comstock, So., OH.
NEWCOMERS: Ali Solet, So.,
S-DS; Kelsey Fortney, Fr., S-UT.
SCOUTING REPORT: The prospects for improvement at Clearview look good. Dziak and Zellers were All-PAC, all-county and all-district in ’07. Marcucci lettered as a sophomore but missed all of last season (knee injury). Roule set a school record for digs in a match (27) last year.

Columbia Raiders

COACH: Wendy Owens, 2nd year
2007 RECORD: 11-10 (6-7)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (7): J.J. Lubinski, Sr., DS; Chelsea Schabo, Sr., DS; Christa Wodarczyk, Sr., OH; Emily Nagel, Jr., S-OH; Courtney Traut, Jr., MH; Brooke Wenzel, Jr., OH; Kelsey Dombrowski, So., S.
NEWCOMERS: Rachel Ercegovic, Sr., DS; Kelsey Kelly, So., MH; Taylor Ratliff, So., DS.
SCOUTING REPORT: Height will be an issue for the Raiders, who will be hard-pressed to replace their lone senior from 2007, All-PAC middle hitter Melanie Bowes. Quickness, passing and setting (Columbia will run a 6-2 offense) are strong.

Lutheran West Longhorns

COACH: Tim Miller, 2nd year
2007 RECORD: 8-13 (7-6)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (7): Aimee Carpenter, Sr., MH; Erin Smith, Sr., DS; Lauren Thomas, Sr., OH; Taylor Thompson, Sr., MH; Kristyn Zollos, Sr., DS; Anna Ali, Jr., OH; Maren Dickey, Jr., OH.
NEWCOMERS: Laura Anthony, Sr. OH; Casey Kessler, Sr., S; Christin Lewis, Jr., S; Jamie Liese, Jr., L; Lauren Thompson, Fr., OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: The Longhorns are tall, quick and run a lot of offense. “Our left-side hitters (Dickey, Lauren Thompson) are absolutely dominating,” Miller said. If the team acquires the confidence it lacked last season, a winning record should be assured.

Oberlin Phoenix

COACH: Stacey Walton, 4th year
2007 RECORD: 10-11 (5-8)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (4): Kara Campbell-Curl, Sr., S-OH; Mia McFarland, Sr., MH; Monica Rimbert, Sr., OH; Amari Foster, Jr., UT.
NEWCOMERS: Tommie Jackson-Smith, Sr., DS; Isoke Miller, Sr., DS; Kree Campbell-Curl, Jr., S-DS; Kayla Jackson, Fr., S.
SCOUTING REPORT: Walton calls this the most athletic team she’s coached in her four years with the Phoenix. Foster is the most athletic of all. She’s a tremendous jumper and can be put in any position needed to be filled and do a credible job. Oberlin needs to get healthy doses of confidence to move up in the PAC standings.

SOUTHWESTERN CONFERENCE

Amherst Comets

COACH: Laurie Cogan, 18th year
2007 RECORD: 24-3 (13-1)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (7): Ashley Aponte, Sr. L; Angie Pellittiere, Sr., DS; Lauren Percival, Sr., S; Olivia Sliman, Sr., DS; Abby Burgdorf, Jr. MH; Mandy Taylor, Jr., MH; Deme Morales, So., OH.
NEWCOMERS: Katie Schuster, Jr., MH; Aleecia Sunagel, Jr., OH; Kaylee Koller, So., OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: Lorain County Miss Volleyball Courtney Jarvis and a couple other good players are gone, but Amherst looks like another well-stocked ammunition depot. Team chemistry, quick feet and strong back-row defense will be the personality for this year’s Comets. Morales is a great leaper, but Amherst is not a tall team overall.

Avon Lake Shoregals

COACH: Jen Howser, 2nd year
2007 RECORD: 11-14 (8-6)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (5): Carly Dalgleish, Sr., OH; Katie Largent, Sr., DS; Allie Palmer, Sr., MH; Calli Wakefield, Sr., S; Kaity Mullen, Jr., OH.
NEWCOMERS: Liz Lancione, Sr., DS; Bri Heschel, Jr., OH; Taylor Kuhar, Jr., DS-S; Ashley Prince, So., L; Danielle Donelan, Fr., MH.
SCOUTING REPORT: Palmer will be a four-year letterwinner and Wakefield is in her third year as a starter. The Shoregals have good size and great senior leadership. What they need to do is believe they can compete with the giants of the SWC.

North Olmsted Eagles

COACH: Jason Krucek, 3rd year
2007 RECORD: 10-13 (6-8)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (6): Amanda Balasko, Sr., OH; Kim Bulcroft, Sr. MH; Bridget Connolly, Sr., DS; Ashley Dancik, Sr., S; Ann Tomko, Sr., OH-MH, Steph Howell, Jr., S-OH.
NEWCOMERS: Sarah Lemmeier, Jr., OH; Ashley Lindemann, Jr., S-OH; Taylor Neuendorfer, Jr., MH.
SCOUTING REPORT: The Eagles are looked upon as one of the area’s most improved teams and could be the one that gives Amherst and Olmsted Falls a run for their money. Offense is a strength, but Krucek believes defense could become a strength as well. The Eagles have good size and a strong front with Balasko and Bulcroft.

Olmsted Falls Bulldogs

COACH: Dawn Moses, 14th year
2007 RECORD: 22-4 (13-1)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (5): Christine Peffer, Sr., MH; Brooke Purvis, Sr., L; Brittany Snider, Sr., OH; Lauren Whyte, Sr., OH; Dayna Roberts, So., S.
NEWCOMERS: Rachel Hansinger, Sr., DS; Sara Piccolomini, Sr., DS; Steph Strodtbeck, Sr., DS; Shannon Deleur, Jr., S; Corrine Manley, Jr., MH; Angie Bush, Fr., MH.
SCOUTING REPORT: There is no reason to believe the Bulldogs won’t have another banner year. Falls is strong at the net and in the back row. If an adequate replacement is found for All-Ohio setter Julie Radigan, the ’Dogs could enjoy another 20-victory season. White, headed to play volleyball at George Washington University, is closing in on a school record for kills.

Westlake Demons

COACH: Dan Berkheimer, 14th year
2007 RECORD: 14-11 (6-8)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (8): Hanna Dixon, Sr., NH; Emily Dvorak, Sr., OH; Jess Roff, Sr., OH; Jennie Wolf, Sr., MH; Maureen Zappone, Sr., S; Colletta Carmichael, Jr., S; Cassie Pyle, Jr., DS; Erin Thomas, Jr., MH.
NEWCOMER: Grace Samenuk, So., DS.
SCOUTING REPORT: Westlake has more veterans returning than any other SWC team, including four-year letterwinner Dixon (one letter at Bay High School). The Demons can jump, although they have no player taller than 5-9.

WEST SHORE CONFERENCE

Avon Eagles

COACH: Stephanie Reichert, 3rd year
2007 RECORD: 8-16 (6-8)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (4): Christina Herbst, Sr., MH; Kenzie Berkheimer, Jr., S; Sara Ladegaard, Jr., MH; Allison Lighty, Jr., OH.
NEWCOMERS: Lindsay Koehler, Jr., L; Grace LaFarciola, Jr., DS; Marlene Michelich, Jr., OH; Jenn Smola, Jr., OH; Paige Matisak, So., S.
SCOUTING REPORT: The return of Herbst (208 kills, 157 blocks in 2007) and starting setter Berkheimer almost insures Avon will improve. The Eagles are strong up front with Herbst and Ladegaard. Depth is a concern.

Bay Rockets

COACH: Tony Tahan, 16th year
2007 RECORD: 11-11 (8-6)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (6): Pam Urwin, Sr., OH; Tori Carras, Jr., OH; Kelly Selong, Jr., DS; Sarah Vick, Jr., MH; Bridget Doughty, So., S; Marissa Radick, So., OH.
NEWCOMERS: Alyssa Cady, Jr., OH; Carrie Scanniello, So., S-DS; Katie McFeeley, Fr., S-DS; Jenny Osborne, Fr., OH-MH; Rachel Vick, Fr., MH; Claire Wilson, Fr., OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: Vick is a 6-1 force in the middle. The Rockets are also dangerous on the outside with veteran Urwin and outstanding all-around athlete Radick. Depth is a weakness, so Bay must avoid major injuries.

Fairview Warriors

COACH: Dana Artman, 19th year
2007 RECORD: 17-6 (13-1)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS: 0.
NEWCOMERS: Jackie Compton, Sr., DS; Gabrielle Craider, Sr., DS; Jen Murtha, Sr., MH; Katherine Schaefer, Sr., OH; Julianne Borowske, Jr., OH; Sierra Hannus, Jr., OH; Katie Kelleher, Jr., MH; Kayla Iwias, So., DS; Katie McGowan, So., S.
SCOUTING REPORT: The Warriors will have to defend their WSC championship with last year’s junior varsity, which won the conference JV tournament.

Firelands Falcons

COACH: Jim Muth, 9th year
2007 RECORD: 4-19 (2-12)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (8): Vanessa Borrelli, Sr., MH-OH; Carly Grude, Sr., MH; Brittany Smith, Sr., DS; Stephanie Wargo, Sr., OH; Abby Williams, Sr., S; Teresa Davis, Jr., OH; Kayla Williams, Jr., MH; Morgan Mastellone, So., L.
NEWCOMER: April McCoy, Jr., OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: Look for a better record this year. The Falcons have experience and a strong floor leader in Abby Williams.

Midview Middies

COACH: Deb Borsz, 3rd year
2007 RECORD: 17-5 (13-1)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (8): Morgan Adkins, Sr., OH; Stephanie Bayus, Jr., OH; Hannah Duran, Sr., S; Lindsay Payne, Sr., OH; Janie Rauscher, Sr., MH; Jacki Street, Sr., MH; Danielle Szpak, Sr., OH; Mary Brown, Jr., L.
NEWCOMER: Arrianna Cumberledge, Fr., OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: Eight returnees, including All-WSC choices Duran and Street, make Midview the big favorite to win the conference championship. The Middies have speed, athletic ability and strong defense. Passing needs to get better.

North Ridgeville Rangers

COACH: Kelsey McQuality, 1st year
2007 RECORD: 10-13 (4-10)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (2): Cory Rechner, Sr., S; Rachel Crow, So., MH.
NEWCOMERS: Anne Henderson, Sr., DS; Megan Stone, Sr., OH; Lauren Brockman, Jr., DS; Cassie Falasco, Jr., OH; Nicole Fraley, Jr., OH; Anna Frederick, Jr., OH-MH; Haley Gall, Jr., OH; Cassidy LeBlanc, Jr., DS; Deirdre Lanigan, Jr., MH; Jamie Slaman, Jr., S.
SCOUTING REPORT: Almost everybody is new at North Ridgeville, including the coach. The Rangers want to run a fast-paced offense. Most of the players are familiar with each other, having played together for two years on the junior varsity.

Rocky River Pirates

COACH: Kelly Bennett, 2nd year
2007 RECORD: 15-10 (10-4)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (8): Maureen Kessler, Sr., MH; Marybeth Leitch, Sr., DS; Molly McCarthy, Sr., S; Jenny Truong, Sr., DS; Heather Vargo, Sr., OH; Erin Higham, Jr., S-DS; Molly McNally, Jr., OH; Maeve Kessler, So., MH.
NEWCOMERS: Caroline Cercone, Jr., OH; Maggie Orris, Jr., OH; Clara Oster, Jr., DS; Jackie Plevelich, So., OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: A veteran cast will give Rocky River a good shot at a conference title. The Pirates have two of the premier middle hitters in the WSC and a talented setter.

Vermilion Sailors

COACH: Marty Yonkof, 3rd year
2007 RECORD: 3-20 (0-14)
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (7): Lea Baron, Sr., S; Laura Bodde, Sr., OH; Katie Swinehart, Sr., OH; Julia Clark, Jr., OH; Katie Karres, Jr., OH; Andrea Rini, Jr. S; Alyssa Rodriguez, Jr., L.
NEWCOMERS: Sarah Besida, Sr., MH; Erica Pelton, Sr., L; Paige Qua, Jr., MH; Nikki Dyke, So., OH; Jamie Gregory, So., OH; Maddie Virgin, So., MH.
SCOUTING REPORT: The Sailors have a veteran team that should get them out of the conference basement. Height and jumping ability are strengths. Serve receiving is shaky so far.

INDEPENDENTS

First Baptist Sabres

COACH: Jen Burman, 8th year
2007 RECORD: 2-13
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (5): Dana Kincaid, Sr., S; Carissa Leitch, Sr., S; Reilly Parker, Sr., L; Liz Feist, Jr., MH; Chrissy Vincent, Jr., OH.
NEWCOMERS: Kelly Barrett, Jr., DS; Meagan Panfil, So., S; Kara Barr, Fr., MH; Courtney Lamitie, F., OH; Sarah Pence, Fr., OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: Middle hitting and serving should be strengths. Development of the newcomers will determine success.

Lake Ridge Lions

COACH: Sue Bus, 15th year
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (5): Reeya Patel, Sr., OH; Sarah Persaud, Sr., MH; Brittany Brown, Jr., L; Alexa Inman, Jr., OH; Charley Culberson, So., MH.
NEWCOMERS: Emily Glor, Fr., S; Jordan Guidish, Fr., OH; Mikey Jackson-Smith, Fr., MH.
SCOUTING REPORT: Open Door will start three freshmen. The players are quick and have good blocking skills, but lack of varsity experience is a concern.

Open Door Patriots

COACH: Lawana Dunckel, 13th year
2007 RECORD: 10-10
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS (5): Olivia Boaz, Sr., S-OH; Courtney Dunckel, Sr., DS; Courtney Gilberg, Sr., DS-OH; Chelsea Pyle, Sr., DS-OH; Kelsey Meyers, Jr., MH.
NEWCOMERS: Courtney Collins, Sr., S; Jeni Dodd, Jr., MH; Brooke Wilmoth, Jr., DS; Amanda Bublenic, So., OH; Jennifer Legan, Fr., S-OH.
SCOUTING REPORT: Five seniors who, as their coach says, “love to play,” could help younger players stay focused and produce a winning season.

3 HOT TOPICS

The J.O. factor

It might seem as if the same teams dominate the area’s volleyball scene year in and year out. Many coaches will tell you a volleyball club can come out of nowhere faster than a team in any other sport.
“Junior Olympics is the reason,” Amherst coach Laurie Cogan said. “You have so many girls playing in the summer, you’ll have a hard time knowing how much better they’ve gotten from one (high school) season to the next.”

Brecksville’s ascendancy

If any team can upset the balance of power in the Southwestern Conference, it’s probably Brecksville.
The Bees (13-9 overall, 8-6 SWC in ’07) got a shot in the arm from sophomore transfer Olivia Chrzanowski, a starter at Padua last year. She joins senior Meredith Paskert, who has committed to play at Kent State next year, and junior all-district outside hitter Lindsay Remington.

They’re back

They were away for only a year, but Wendy Owens (Columbia) and Terry Traut (Admiral King) are back in the coaching business.
Owens took a season off from the Raiders to have a baby. Traut didn’t coach the Admirals in 2007 because of staff realignments in the Lorain City Schools.

3 TOP TEAMS

Olmsted Falls Bulldogs

Outside hitter Lauren Whyte and libero Brooke Purvis are probably the best in the Southwestern Conference at their positions. Replacing
All-Ohio setter Julie Radigan will be a chore.

Amherts Comets

Experience? Check. Quickness? Check. Defense? Check. The only thing the Comets lack is height.
Midview Middies
Eight veterans return to a team that went 17-5 in ’07. With Hannah Duran doing the setting and Jacki Street patrolling the middle, the Middies will be tough to un-seat in the West Shore Conference.

3 TOP MATCHES

Brookside at Keystone, tonight

The Cardinals have a wealth of talent back from last year, but the cupboard at Keystone isn’t exactly bare for new coach Jim Horvath.

Midview at Avon, Sept. 4

The Middies are strong favorites to win the West Shore Conference, but with such star power (Hannah Duran, Christina Herbst, Jacki Street) the entertainment value of this match is high.

Amherst at Olmsted Falls, Sept. 25

This will be the second meeting of the season between the teams, so expect one to enter the match unbeaten in SWC play and the other to go in with one loss in the conference.
