Power outage caused by excavator

ELYRIA — Power was out and medical tests were canceled most of Friday at the Ohio Imaging Center near Midway Mall after an excavator dug up a power line Friday morning, Ohio Edison spokesman Joe Faga said.
The heavy machinery pulled a cable from a transformer near the medical facility, which caused the outage from 10:25 a.m. to about 5:30 p.m., Faga said.
The problem was quickly pinpointed to the transformer outside the imaging center, Faga said.
“We had an employee working in the area and heard an explosion — there was a bang,” Faga said.
A small amount of fluid leaked from the transformer at 1900 West River Road and was cleaned up, he said.
Mammograms and other types of medical imaging performed at the center were rescheduled or switched to Community Regional Medical Center in Lorain and
Allen Community Hospital in Oberlin, according to Jennifer Kennedy, a spokeswoman for Community Health Partners.Although power was lost, the center still had use of its phones and battery power to preserve its archives, she said.
“No images were lost,” Kennedy said.
Faga said he did not know who was responsible for the digging accident, but he said Ohio Edison will follow its typical procedure to recover losses when its power lines are disturbed.
Kennedy said the imaging center would be open today.
As crews were working to restore power to the imaging center, power went out in Elyria Township for about 800 customers, Faga said.
The outage occurred at 4:30 p.m. for customers around Lake Avenue and state Route 254, and power was restored by 5:40, he said.
Faga said the cause of the second outage was undetermined.
