LCCC atheists put up ‘gay Jesus’ poster
Jason Hawk | The Chronicle-Telegram
ELYRIA — Jesus Christ had a homosexual relationship?
Those words, written on a poster above the image of a topless man tenderly kissing Jesus on the neck, angered dozens of students Thursday night at Lorain County Community College.
“We had complaints all day,” said Amanda Lucero, a senior who also works at The Student Connection. “It’s sexually graphic. It’s very suggestive, and it still would be if it were a man and a woman.”
The sign went up about 4 p.m. in College Center student commons as part of Club Awareness Week, along with many other displays advertising student-run extracurricular organizations.
Students stopped to gawk, then grew angry and very vocal about the statement made by the poster.
Campus security guards said offended undergrads voiced complaints for about three straight hours, but the sign remained up because it didn’t present a security issue.
“You can’t portray Jesus like that. He believes in matrimony, that relationships like that should be done inside matrimony,” sophomore Brianna Holland said.

She said she believes homosexuality is wrong because she is a Christian, but she also said she is proud that her religion teaches tolerance and acceptance.
“I have a lot of homosexual friends. I’m not going to tell them they’re going to hell. That’s something they have to take care of between them and God,” Holland said.
Student aide Jessica Hodge said she felt the poster would “pollute the minds” of her children, ages 2 and 5, if they saw it.
“It looks like soft-core pornography,” she said. “I don’t think they’re making a statement at all. They just want to shock everyone.”
A Christian, Hodge said she doesn’t try to force her opinions on others. Questioning religion is fine, but mocking it isn’t, she said.
Lucero said the LCCC student handbook agrees, and pointed out a part of the school code that says, “Harassing any person(s) verbally, in writing, by graphic illustration, or physically, including any abuse, defamatory comments, signs or signals intended to mock or ridicule race, religion, age, sex, color, disability, sexual orientation, or national or ethnic origin” is not allowed.
“In higher education, we certainly respect all viewpoints. There is debate, and there are different perspectives,” Marcia Ballinger, LCCC’s vice president, said. “Controversy on a college campus from students is something that is inherent to free speech.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean she agrees with the message of the poster.
Christopher Burns is the secretary and treasurer of the campus Activists for Atheism club, which put up the poster.
He said it wasn’t intended to mock religion. Instead, the poster was meant to stir debate about Christianity by referencing a passage of the Bible that was allegedly cut out by early Christians.
Burns said most Christians have never heard of the Secret Gospel of Mark, which was found inscribed in a letter by Greek historian Clement of Alexandria. The letter has been disputed for decades and is now lost, with only photographs of the passages remaining for study.
One text from the letter hints that the Bible’s account of Mark’s gospel originally told the tale of Jesus raising a man from the dead and then having an intimate relationship with him, said Aaron Weaver, a senior at LCCC and president of the college atheist club.
“The purpose of the poster is to get students to see something they haven’t seen before,” he said. “The chances are it challenges them to challenge something they thought they knew.”
Sure, the poster was attention-seeking, but ultimately Weaver said he just wanted to create enough buzz to get people debating and thinking about why they believe what they believe.
“I understand that people will be offended. People will sometimes be offended for the most ridiculous of reasons,” he said.
He said his fellow students have the right to practice their religions and to express themselves in any way they choose.
He said he was shocked to learn the college had a policy that bans students from mocking religion, or any idea, for that matter. The policy is a clear violation of the First Amendment, Weaver said.
Sophomore Dejoune Grantham said the poster is libelous and blasphemous, and in her opinion it isn’t protected by the First Amendment.
“I don’t want my children walking through here and seeing that. It’s filthy,” she said.
Another sophomore, Amber Cales, said the poster was in a public place, and it was easily seen by anyone who passed. She said that took away her right as a parent to shield her children from controversial ideas.
She said she also felt the poster was just taking a pot-shot at Christianity instead of protesting all religious expression.
“You know if it was something about Judaism or Islam, it wouldn’t be tolerated,” she said.
A student named Zach Jefferson, who Weaver said is not a member of the atheist group, decided about 7:30 p.m. to take down the poster, but he wouldn’t say why.
Laura Nash, president of the Student Senate, said she wasn’t surprised at the outrage so many students voiced.
She said anyone offended should write a complaint and submit it to the Campus Life Division or campus security.
Weaver said anyone offended by the poster has never read the Bible.
“The Bible is full of gross sexuality, rape, murder. If you’ve read through the Old Testament, you’d be disgusted,” he said.
He said he received permission from Student Life officers to put up the poster but was denied permission to place smaller versions on bulletin boards.
And Weaver said he didn’t just take a shot at Christianity. On Wednesday, he put up a picture of the prophet Mohammed — an act strictly forbidden in the Islamic faith.
He said that about 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, he received a death threat in response to the picture, which read, “With love and missiles.” He took the picture down, turned over the note to campus security officers and went home.
“I put myself at risk, but I do so freely. I don’t let fear or the threat of death stop me from speaking my mind freely,” he said.

Great start to a career by these liberal, do-nothing punks. They’re only upset because they couldn’t get into Oberlin College to display their trash. This doesn’t deserve another inch of newspaper space in the future. Post stuff and receive death threats. Tit for Tat. Too bad.

“Atheism” - denies the major claims of all varieties of theism. In the words of Ernest Nagel, a atheist, “Atheism denies the existence of a self-consistent, omnipotent, omniscient, righteous and benevolent being who is distinct from and independent of what has been created” (philosophy,2008,p251).
These students that hung up this picture just disproved that they are atheist. A true atheist would not even acknowledge Jesus as a Savior, maybe a person but not as a god. These students just admitted they believe in something, “theism”.
Hopefully, these students will receive an education while at LCCC and learn the difference between an atheist and pop cultural shock.

To the comment left at 6:52 am by “me”: I AM an Atheists, and do not actually believe in the existence of Jesus Christ. (Luckily for me, quite a bit of scholarly evidence presides over that idea). It was a discussion topic about scripture. Get over it.
To the mothers who are so dramatic about it offending their children: If you plan to keep your children away from the scholarly pursuit of knowledge and understanding, then you are a wretched mother. How dare you keep your children in ignorance so blatantly…. you should be ashamed of yourselves.
If anyone outraged would like to have a formal debate about the poster (or anything for that matter) feel free to contact my email, and we can set it up. (campus.atheists@gmail.com). If not, then keep displaying your anti-free speech messages, you fascist crackpots.
You do not have the right to NOT be offended. Offense is a CHOICE - and in this case, it’s a silly one.

A true atheist would not care enough about a mjor religion to ridicule it in such a juvenile manner. These half-wits think that they’re being intelligent just because they’re creating controversy. Sorry, but the intelligent students your age left Elyria a while ago, ladies and gentlemen. There is a difference between creating a dialogue or debate and just trying to make headlines by intentionally being abusive.

I do have the right to be offended and do have the right to encourage my daughter to pick a different school to obtain her nursing degree.
Aaron you are allowed your beliefs. I question my own at times. But why are you so angry by mothers who disagree with you. Why call them names? This is their freedom of speech. Are you not a fascist as well?

Another sign of immaturity and a want of intellect:
Aaron and his pals created a poster for one reason only: to incite those who actually live by an ethos. The poster incited the very people which Aaron and his pals had targeted. Now he tries to hide behind free speech due to the backlash, labeling those he disagrees with “fascists”. However, they have the same right that he does: to voice their opinions and ridicule his embarassingly weak intellectual persepctive.

Why am I angry at mothers who shield their children from knowledge? Because they tend to raise unintelligent miscreants that do nothing but cause REAL problems in society (i.e. wars, hate crimes, etc.).
Put your pathetic attempts at sarcasm aside - calling me a nitwit? I CHALLENGE you to a debate. Let’s see how you fare… probably not so well, Tim. You see, while you’ve been sitting around in the lap of your imaginary Lord, I’ve been reading, researching, and becoming smarter than you. It seems that for being an Atheist, I know quite a bit more about Christianity than, well, Christians!
Bring it on.

If you want, simply email me at campus.atheists@gmail.com…. it will get sent directly to my phone, so you can give me your unintelligent hate messages no matter where I am!

You’re in community college. You’ve been “becoming smarter than me”? I have a B.A. from a real school, a masters in philosophy, and a J.D. I didn’t call you a nitwit. I called you a half-wit. And I was being generous. Smarter than me. A real laugher.
You are being led on by some half-wit adjunct “professor” with a Masters from the very same community college you attend.
And where did I say what my belief system was? You assume I am a Christian because you are a mental midget, whose limited studies and training require that he can only debate someone if he assumes he is a Christian.
Explain how life came to being, Aaron. Do what scientists who studied at real schools, research at real schools, and teach at real schools cannot. Read up on the Human Genome Project.

Actually, Crystal, I held a debate at Lorain County Community College in May - it went quite well. A lot of people showed up - freethinkers, people not afraid to talk about controversial issues, and then there’s always the creepy religious fanatics. Which one are you?
Tim, you’re certainly entitled to your beliefs, and I’m entitled to mine. I have challenged you to debate numerous times now, and have received nothing in response… it appears that you do not have the confidence to support your statements.

Why have a debate? Are you trying to convince people of atheism? For what purpose? Why has atheism become an evangelical pursuit?
Don’t say “because people kill in the name of religion.” It is a far greater truth that once people kill God, killing people in the name of atheism is much simpler. See Stalin, Mao, Che, Castro, Pol Pot, Hitler, et. al.
There is no reason for me to debate you. If someone is completely certain no god exists, even when they don’t have any answers for how lfie began, it is not worth debating. I speak to agnostics, because they are searching for answers, knowing that all the answers aren’t available. You ignored the question I asked you, because it is where atheism fails.
So apart from waiting for you to answer how life began, I will not have any other debate with you. Your poster was designed to enflame. It did. Congratulations, you have no belief system, and have sought and succeeded to upset those who do.
Here’s a hint: Your answer has to jhow life began must be scientific, because anything else would be a supernatural answer, and beyond the pale of atheism.
Another hint: Scientists cannot answer how life began.
I’ll be waiting.

Hmmm… I’ve been receiving quite a bit of POSITIVE emails about what I did. It appears that people who support free thinking are letting their voices be heard by emailing me. All the negative individuals seem to only be putting their mind-numbing thoughts in comment form against me.
I will never stop bringing up ideas to discuss. NEVER. You’ll have to kill me to stop me from exercising my right to free speech. That right is the one thing that I would gladly die for. I don’t care about a flag or a race or a creed or ANY of that in-group mentality nonsense. I care about the ideology behind actually being free. It appears that I hold more regard for certain American ideals than the flag waving Christians (or non Christians) do.
And if you think that I don’t have the right to do what I did, then I regret to inform you that the SUPREME COURT RULED UNANIMOUSLY IN FAVOR OF THE POSITION THAT I TAKE.

Your claiming that Hitler was an Atheist is unfounded - he has never refuted his Roman Catholicism (and the Roman Catholic church had no problem letting him do what he did). Stalin went to school to become a priest for about 9 years… the problem wasn’t that he was too much of an Atheist - he was just too much like religion.
Why debate with me? Well, you seem to disagree, and it would seek to clarify that disagreement. Yeesh, if I have to tell you the value of debate, then apparently you went to college for no reason.

Sure, scientists cannot claim to know exactly how life started; but instead of prematurely inducing to a god, scientists deduce further and further, gathering evidence in hopes of reaching an actual answer.
It’s funny that the people who ACTUALLY claim to know how life began are the one’s that did the least amount of research into the matter.

Also, good looking out on taking down Muhammad. You wouldn’t want to anger the religion that actually does more than sit and cry about people taking shots at them. From what I understand you left your table after putting the image up. If you truly are an atheist and want to debate and fight for your beliefs you could have stuck around to witness everything unfold. Then you could have told the people sitting in the lap of their imaginary lord a thing or two about being intelligent and thinking for themselves. You’re no better than the “sheep” you talk about. I can’t possibly grasp why homosexuality should even be remotely considered,’WRONG”. Stating that its wrong just because it’s worng and wanting to control people is in itself inherently wrong. If you approach the issue of homsexuality from a biological perspective, same sex relationships won’t bring about a baby. So, it goes against a civil right.
For instance, put a complete switch on the situation, straights can’t practice what makes them happy because its said to be wrong. Better yet, try telling me that Its wrong for me to prefer latin women. haha.

I feel that unless you actually challenge the ideas that you have been brought up with, and question the way society wants you to behave, you cannot be considered religious, just indoctrinated. What Aaron is doing is to help people open their minds to alternative theories and ideas.
Tim, your idea that various dictators who were/are atheists proves that atheists lack morals is completely unfounded. There have been and are loads more evil people who were religious in history, many using religion as justification. Stalin and Co. never used atheism to justify their mass murders; they were just mentally unstable people who happened to not believe in a God.
And Tim, you keep claiming that us Atheists are trying to stifle the opposition; on the contrary, there is a lot of prejudice in America about atheists. About 49% of Americans would vote for a atheist president, that hardly compares against the past forty three.

First of all, to reply to the first comment on here…
“Sorry to get technical, but wasn’t Jesus born as the result of an out of wedlock pregnancy?”
Actually, no… If you believe in the Scripture then you believe he was born of Immaculate Conception, by the VIRGIN Mary. Which means his “mommy and daddy” didn’t have premarital relations.
Secondly, the Campus Activists for Atheism group is filled of a bunch of pussies. They put up their sign and leave, instead of having the balls to defend their beliefs. Very quick to reply to a comment on here, but why don’t you go out of hiding behind your computer screen and defend your beliefs face to face?

Brujacksparrow(Al sharp?),
Aaron has posted the email numerous times encouraging people to reply. We are open to debate in a civil manner anytime we are on campus. Unfortunately, atheists aren’t super people, so there will be an hour that we won’t be at the college. We do other things that take up our time: work ,read, read, read, read, meditate, and go to wine outings. We do not need to defend our beliefs since its,”belief versus acceptance of reality”. We have accepted reality, now, its up to those who have beliefs to defend theirs to us.

You say:
Tim, your idea that various dictators who were/are atheists proves that atheists lack morals is completely unfounded.
I say:
I didn’t say that. I asked why atheists decided to start evangelizing. Your lack of belief shouldn’t concern anyone else. I said don’t use killing in the name of God as an excuse for your evangelism, because atheists have killed in far larger numbers. Atheists have killed by the millions. Never in human history has any religion killed on the massive scope that atheists did in the twentieth century.
You said:
Stalin and Co. never used atheism to justify their mass murders; they were just mentally unstable people who happened to not believe in a God.
I say:
Convenient. Actually they killed God to push the state as the supreme being. Once this was done, killing millions became easily justifiable to achieve their statist agenda. Never in history has a country been ruled by atheists without them doing a lot of killing. It started in France in the eighteenth century, and continues today. How can you say that atheism is not related to genocidal authoritarianism, when the two have always gone hand in hand? That’s a huuuuuge coincidence.
Then you wrote:
And Tim, you keep claiming that us Atheists are trying to stifle the opposition; on the contrary, there is a lot of prejudice in America about atheists. About 49% of Americans would vote for a atheist president, that hardly compares against the past forty three.
I say:
No I didn’t claim that “you atheists” were stifling opposition. I was saying Aaron’s gripes about the First Amendment were unfounded, and his crying foul about being criticized was comical. He thought the First Amendment should protect him from the ensuing criticism of his poor judgment. And your facts about voting are explained rather simply: Most people correctly assume that someone who is certain there is no God has poor judgment. It is impossible to deny God with certainty if you have no answer for how life began. That is not being bigoted. It is making a fair judgment based on one’s knowledge of a candidate. That’s how elections work.

Btw…brujack…Being that god’s the father and assisted in the conception, mary and god weren’t married, so in essence he was correct in stating that god’s an adulterer. I do understand that’s what he was getting at.

Tim,
I call shenanigans in your claim that these men actually stated that they were doing this,”for atheism” or “for the betterment of atheism”. When I say calling shenanigans I mean I am fact check challenging you. If you are going to make a very interesting claim as such, it’s encourage that you cite your resources for direct quotes on the matter.
Besides, Hitler created his own religion,”The blood religion”, preyed on people’s nationalism, and took advantage of anti-semitism that already existed for two thousand years. I mean, what do I know. ![]()

Why am I angry at mothers who shield their children from knowledge? Because they tend to raise unintelligent miscreants that do nothing but cause REAL problems in society (i.e. wars, hate crimes, etc.).
OKAY, NOW I’M UPSET. AS A MOTHER OF A 12 ALMOST 13 YEAR OLD CHILD I AM THOROUGHLY DISGUSTED WITH THIS COMMENT. IF YOU WANT TO GO ON A HEAD ON HEAD DEBATE THEN YOU CAN MEET ME IN THE HS BUILDING ON TUESDAYS OR THURSDAYS AROUND 12:30. HOW DARE YOU SAY WE RAISE UNINTELLIGENT, MISCREANTS JUST BECAUSE WE WANT TO SHIELD OUR CHILDREN FROM FILTH LIKE WHAT YOU PUT UP. I’LL HAVE YOU KNOW I TEACH MY SON ABOUT THE ENTIRE WORLD EVEN IF I TEND NOT TO BELIEVE IN SOMETHING. HE LEARNS IT STRAIGHT FROM ME….THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY. I DON’T YET THINK YOU HAVE THE MATURITY THAT YOU THINK YOU DO IN CREATING SUCH A CONTROVERSY SUCH AS THIS. FREE SPEECH IS FREE SPEECH BUT WHEN YOU RESORT TO NAME CALLING AND QUESTIONING THE WAY MOMS RAISE THEIR CHILDREN THEN YOU’VE CROSSED THE LINE.

Aaron does not want to actually debate anything. no matter what anyone says to him he will continue to run around with blinders on just spewing the much that he think he has “learned”. This is no different that posting some type of shocking video on youtube. He and his little club want to get some publicity, and that exactly what they did. I say jut ignore this guy and let him fall back into they zone he is used to where no one really cares what he says. I do have a big problem with his “I’d die for this and that” comment. I don’t see a possible way that you could be willing to die for freedom of speech, but not the country that allows you that freedom. I think you are just a mouthpiece that happens to have nothing better to do that pollute the internet with nonsense. I personally am willing to fight and die to protect my country and the freedoms I and you have in it. The difference is I proved it by joining that Marines. What exactly did you do, Aaron, to prove your willingness to die for what you believe in?

““You can’t portray Jesus like that. He believes in matrimony, that relationships like that should be done inside matrimony,” sophomore Brianna Holland said.”
Sorry to get technical, but wasn’t Jesus born as the result of an out of wedlock pregnancy?
Wouldn’t that make him a… you know… where the mommy and daddy aren’t married to each other…
OK, God’s an adulterer, yet he hates fags according to the bible thumpers?
