St. Jude Parish Festival
The 24th annual St. Jude Parish Festival will have everything to make this year’s festival worth coming to. All are invited to the festival from noon to 9 p.m. Aug. 31.

Attendees can enjoy meals of barbecue chicken and ribs from noon to 6 p.m. provided by Smith’s Catering, as well as grilled bratwurst and pierogies. Then, take a turn at karaoke 1 to 4 p.m., play Texas Hold ’Em or bingo, or compete in “Are you Smarter than a St. Jude Student?”

The day will include basketball and soccer shootout competitions, raffles, a Chinese auction and face painting and a caricaturist clown for the kids. The biggest event of the day will be a chance to win a 2008 Chevy Aveo donated by Jack Matia Chevrolet.

St. Jude students learn Chinese
The east meets west this year at St. Jude School, where students will learn Chinese curriculum when school resumes soon.

The ChinaLink curriculum will be integrated throughout grades three through six. Groups of students will be taught Mandarin twice weekly, and each homeroom will have lessons in Chinese culture once a week.

Hui-Ying Lee will be the ChinaLink instructor. She has recently been certified by the state of Ohio in Mandarin Language Education.

This is a unique pilot project at St. Jude and the first of such a kind in Lorain County.

“ChinaLink brings an opportunity to our school that heightens the global awareness of students,” said Principal Rozann Swanson. “With television news and the Internet, the world has become a smaller place and young people need to be more globally aware.”

Throughout the upcoming year, faculty will participate in workshops designed to help teachers enhance their instruction making a connection between China and the classroom.
