Elyria gets new kiosk
An information kiosk has been established in historic downtown Elyria thanks to Main Street Elyria, the nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the district.

Placed prominently in Ely Square, the kiosk will keep residents and visitors in the know about activities in downtown Elyria.

“With so many ways to get information in front of the community, the kiosk is a welcomed addition,” said Tamela Grubb, program director. “Main Street Elyria is working to promote the historic aspect of our downtown.”

The kiosk was funded through grant money awarded to Main Street Elyria. It is the first step in historic signage that will be placed through out the district.

The Elyria downtown/West Avenue historic district has the city’s largest concentration of commercial and public buildings, centered on a public green space that forms the physical center of the community, as well as a well-preserved late 19th century and early 20th century neighborhood.

Recycle your stuff
Elyria offers a number of ways to help you recycle.

At the Washington Avenue parking lot, there is a cardboard recycling container to dispose of shipping, cereal and pizza boxes and other cardboard products for recycling. Just flatten boxes first.

Old newspapers, paper and magazines can be dropped off at any of the green and yellow recycling dumpsters at all Elyria Schools and other locations around town. Newspapers only can also be placed in a blue bag for curbside pickup.

Glass jars and bottles, plastics and metal and aluminum cans can be placed in blue bags and placed curbside for pick-up on your regular trash collection day.

A resident shred day is 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 9 behind City Hall. Bring confidential documents to be shredded; there is a six box or bag limit per resident.

For information on the city’s recycling programs, call (440) 326-1404.

Join township’s neighborhood watch
The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office and Elyria Township Neighborhood Watch is recruiting new members. There are approximately 1,500 homes and more than 3,000 residents in Elyria Township, so more block watch groups are needed to cover the area.

Training is 7 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at Elyria Township Hall, 41416 Griswold Road.

“This is a great opportunity for residents to get more involved in the safety of their community,” said sheriff’s Deputy Joe Greiner. “Residents can make a significant difference just by working together and educating themselves about their own personal safety and about the safety of those around them.”

The event will run 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 4-9. The goal is to help educate families about the importance of child safety and to offer free fingerprinting for children.

Representatives from J&L Marketing will discuss Child Protection Education of America and the significance of child protection procedures. They also will distribute informative child safety materials to parents.

Staples seeks supplies for kids
The local Staples store, located at 1733 Midway Mall, is joining a national campaign designed to get school supplies into the hands of deserving kids.

All school supplies and donations will be given to the Boys & Girls Club of Lorain County, an educational and not-for-profit organization that serves disadvantaged youth.

The Do Something 101 (www.dosomething101.com) campaign encourages teens to collect school supplies and drop them off at the nearest Staples store through Aug. 31 for deserving kids just in time for school.

Staples customers can also donate to the cause at Staples, with 100 percent of the proceeds staying in the area.

Attend model airshow
Model Mania 2008 will host a show starting at 1 p.m. Aug. 10 at the club facility at Crawford Field off of Murray Ridge Road. The event, hosted by the Lorain County Radio Control Club, will run until about 4 p.m.

This is a model airshow and exposition highlighting all aspects of the sport of radio controlled model aviation. Demonstrations include thrilling high speed racing aircraft, detailed WWI and WWII scale models, and precision aerobatics rivaling that seen at any full-sized air show. The show concludes with a “candy drop” for all of the children in attendance.
