Vermilion chooses new finance director
VERMILION — A new finance director is expected to tap her experience in larger cities and guide Vermilion through growing pains, Mayor Jean Anderson said.
Michelle L. Bowens was hired July 7 to take over for departing Director of Finance Wayne Hamilton, who retired due to health issues after three years in office, Anderson said.
Bowens, a lifelong Amherst resident, formerly served in deputy positions in North Olmsted and Twinsburg. She has degrees from Cleveland State University and 12 years in municipal finance.
“We’re very grateful to have her, especially with her background,” Anderson said. “She’s going to help us tremendously.”
She said Bowens’ time in Twinsburg — twice the size of Vermilion — will be useful as the city continues to develop.
Bowens was chosen from a pool of seven applicants and will make $66,000 per year.
Teens with knucks take man’s bike
ELYRIA — A 19-year-old Elyria man was robbed of his bicycle by juveniles toting around brass knuckles.
The man told police he had been riding his bike along Middle Avenue when the 17-year-old boy and his 16-year-old friend began to punch him.
Police later found the 17-year-old in possession of the bike. He was charged with robbery, resisting arrest and underage consumption of alcohol.
The 16-year-old boy allegedly used the brass knuckles in the attack, but he had not been charged as of Wednesday.
Pizza deliverer robbed at gunpoint
ELYRIA — A pizza delivery man was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday along Foster Avenue.
The 19-year-old Hungry Howie’s Pizza driver told police he was making a delivery about 11 p.m. to a Foster Avenue apartment when a black man partially masked by a bandana pointed a gun at his head as he got out of his vehicle.
A second man with a sweatshirt hood tied over his face then appeared and took the pizza bag, valued at $75, and the $64 worth of pizzas inside it, as well as the $23 in cash the driver had.
Man hospitalized in apparent shooting
PENFIELD TWP. — A 52-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the stomach about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when his gun suddenly discharged, county sheriff’s Capt. Richard Resendez said.
Michael D. Finucan was flown from his home on the 20000 block of Indian Hollow Road to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where a nursing supervisor said he was in the trauma unit in good condition.
Resendez, who did not identify Finucan by name, said the victim was home alone about a mile north of state Route 18 when a small-caliber handgun accidentally fired and tore into his abdomen.
He said the injured man was conscious when deputies arrived at the home. There doesn’t appear to be any foul play, Resendez said.
The shooting is under investigation, he said.
