Mexicans arrested in restaurant raid
Cindy Leise | The Chronicle-Telegram
OBERLIN — Immigration officials descended on Oberlin on Wednesday and arrested five employees of Casa Fiesta restaurant as part of a raid of eight restaurants in northern Ohio.
“I’m in shock about what happened,” said Jose Mendez, 42, the manager of the restaurant. “I know the people who worked here — they were good people.”
In all, 54 men and four women were arrested at Casa Fiesta restaurants in Ashland, Fremont, Norwalk, Oberlin, Oregon, Sandusky, Vermilion and Youngstown, according to officials with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
All 58 of those arrested are citizens of Mexico, and everyone detained is being medically screened and interviewed to determine if they have medical, sole-caregiver or other humanitarian issues, according to the agency.
Already, three women were released on their own recognizance on humanitarian grounds. They will be required to appear before a federal immigration judge who will determine whether they have a legal right to remain in the United States, according to the agency.
Greg Palmore, immigration spokesman, said the raids were the culmination of a year-long investigation.
Mendez was not at the restaurant at 84 S. Main St. when the special agents served the federal search warrant. He arrived later to find a closed notice on the door and paperwork left inside, he said.
Pulling out a card to show he’s legally in the United States, he said he never received any letter questioning his operation and that he wants to do the right thing. He said he’s worked at the restaurant for about three years, and he was considering buying it.
Palmore, meanwhile, said the responsibility rests with the employer to determine if the employee legally can work in the United States.
So far in fiscal year 2008, the agency has made 949 criminal arrests in connection with worksite enforcement investigations. Of those, 105 involve owners, managers, supervisors or human resources employees who face charges ranging from harboring to knowingly hiring illegal aliens.

The only reasons these folks are here is to support their families. The landscaping firms hire them because Americans would rather sit back and collect assistance instead of working for a living. Almost all of the Cedar Point employees for the summer are from other countries because our children don’t want to work. I’m completely against illegal immigration, but our own folks won’t do it. Make sure they are here illegally or deport them, otherwise there’s nothing to be done.

They should send them all back to Mexico. I sure don’t want to support any illegal alien with my tax dollars. The more they send back, the better. I support enough lazy american people with my tax dollar. It is time for the american people to get off their lazy a**es and get a job, even if it is for minumum wage. At least it is something. Hey, maybe we can just let the dollar keep tanking and then the illegals will just work in Mexico where they can make more money.
Also, our very own Rep. Sutton voted for the mother of all bailouts yesterday with the housing bill. This will just damage our dollar more. I didn’t see much coverage of it.
Worse still she let us down even more because for some reason that bill will require EVERY CREDIT CARD TRANSACTION BE REPORTED TO THE IRS.
You can contact Sutton with one of the numbers below:
Washington, D.C. 202-225-3401
Lorain 440-245-5350
Akron 330-865-8450
This is YOUR tax money being used to bail out rich investors who were so greedy that they just couldn’t settle for usury of homeowners who could afford it, they had to try and fleece the poor too. They then sold off the lousy loans to poor countries and to our school systems as bonds. They should be put in jail not bailed out.

Go ICE!! We need these illegal alien invaders out of OUR nation. They are a net drain. The bring crime, disease, a horrible lack of cultural values. They are, at most, educated to the sixth grade. Who needs it? They take jobs from Americans, ruin American neighborhoods, sex with little girls is acceptable in their culture. They wipe their butts on our American flag. They march in our streets by the thousands and then complain of “living in the shadows”.
For those of you who say Americans are lazy, I suggest you read about the rest of the world and what they think of our work ethic–we are the hardest working people on the planet.
All you have to do to see the “work ethic” of these illegals is to check out their home countries and see what their “hard work” brought them.
Check out this link to see the impact on Ohioans…it’s ridiculous. Go read some sites in California, where they were very liberal with the illegals…and see them scream for mercy now! Don’t be blind. Learn what the reality is.

Go here to see news stories from all over this nation, posted by Americans just like you and me; all races, all income and educational levels. The mainstream media won’t tell you the truth. They’re corporatized and corporate America wants YOU to be slaves too. What better way to do that than to bring in millions of illegal aliens who will underbid you for AMERICAN jobs and trash everything you built? What better way to do that than to sign up for welfare benefits with several different ID’s and let YOU pay for it? lol Don’t be silly…learn
Try http://www.alipac.us/ for nationwide news…the REAL news about this problem.
Go here to see what the Department of Homeland Security told our so-called “leaders” about these invaders…go look at the pretty pictures if you don’ t do anything else.
http://www.house.gov/mccaul/pdf/Investigaions-Border-Report.pdf
If you read it far enough, you’ll see that we have about 240,000 illegal alien sexual predators in this nation, and an 88 month study showed that they will have raped 1 MILLION women and children in this nation before they can be caught.
If you’re black, you had BETTER watch these people. Google Jamiel Shaw…google the four black kids in NJ who were brutally sodomized and raped before they were murdered…one young girl had her FACE chopped off by an illegal.
mexico is one of the most racist nations on the planet. Google the black sambo postage stamp in 2005….there is a cartoon character that has been read there for DECADES…with a little black boy who looks like a monkey…they just got WalMarts in Texas to quit selling it! Most hispanics HATE blacks. The darker you are in mexico, the less you have, the less you will EVER have.
Better read and know what you’re defending if you’re going to defend it.

PATRIOTICME - There are a couple of posts by people in this thread who obviously don’t have a clue of the effects illegal immigration has on our country. It’s the silent stupid majority who enable the deaths of an average 25 Americans a day. It’s the ‘duh what?’ folks who are part of the reason for so many hospitals going broke or shutting down because of the free health care given to the invaders. It’s the ‘I let the mainstream media shape my views’ people who enabled the recent shooting of a father and his two sons deaths at the hands of an illegal alien with an AK47. This happened in San Francisco because the illegal couldn’t make a turn in his car because of traffic. Their blood is on the hands of the see nothing, hear nothing, say nothing, and do nothing brain dead Americans.
There are real Americans of Mexican descent who love this country, fought for this country and try to protect it. I am proud to call them my friends. They have a lot of scorn for people like some of the posters here. Americans who do nothing, but sit on their collective fat asses doing nothing to help. They see not men when they look at you, but women. I see less than that. Funny how more women show up at the border to defend our country than men. Cowards.
PatrioticMe, don’t try to educate the foolish for if they don’t know what’s going on by now, they’ll never know. Everything you stated in your post is spot on. I’m sure your familiar with Frosty Wooldridge. If not, do a search on his name and read his articles.

Why bother arresting illegals if you just turn ‘em back loose into the wild?
“The landscaping firms hire them because Americans would rather sit back and collect assistance instead of working for a living.”
Bull!
Americans don’t want to bust their a**es for next to nothing, which illegals will gladly work for, as they take advantage of our schools and hospitals.
Why should the tax payer subsidize businesses who would rather hire illegals than U.S. citizens, so they can save a buck, while undermining those who run their businesses legally?

I used to be like them and think that people from other countries were harmless. I used to be very liberal and still am in many ways, but MY nation is not for sale! And I will not stand by and watch it turn into a third world nation, overrun by animals. I’ve read and seen enough over the past two years to be EXACTLY sure what we’re getting here.

Jim Jananvin, looks like Cedar Point has joined all the other so-called ‘AMERICAN’ companies who have decided to circumvent hiring Americans. A while back on youtube there was a video of a conference where a law firm was telling companies how NOT to have to hire Americans and they said outright, “Obviously, the goal here is NOT to hire Americans.” I read that they are being sued now…by Judiclal Watch, I think.
I read a post from a person on ALIPAC.US about a week or so ago who said they would work in the fields, but all the ads in the papers just say something like “farm workers needed”….the ads don’t say where or give any contact information, but that way they can SAY they ‘TRIED’ to hire Americans but none applied.

A while back, I was talking to a poster on Topix about illegal aliens. He said he had a friend he had known since childhood who had a landscaping company. He hired a lot of his old school chums to work for him, and he was doing just fine financially, taking the lion’s share like most owners. Then, the illegals came to town and the next season, this company owner told all his buddies he hired the illegals instead of them because the illegals worked cheaper.
In the next couple of years, this company owner bought himself a big, fine house and some new cars, furniture, etc. Then, the illegals bought a truck and some equipment and went to all this guy’s old customers and took his jobs because THEY worked cheaper than HE did.
He was in the process of losing everything he owned the last I heard. hahahahahaha!!! What goes around, comes around!

Dan S. What I find puzzling is this: mexico is directly south of us and shares a border and yet, in all these centuries they never looked north and thought, “Hey, if we want to BE like them, we have to ACT like them and WORK like them.” And so forth.
If they would go home and make the DEMANDS on their own government that they make on ours, they’d see a lot of improvement, and if that failed, well, there’s always civil war. They’re in a war down there now anyhow fighting the drug cartels. Of course, WE are the ones they run to for free medical care when the cartels let them live. Then WE pay for it. Hospitals in TX are screaming for mercy. For the hospitals in California, it’s too late.

Tax payers have to cover this “cheap labor’s” other expenses such as medical care and education.

Gala, what’s happening is, these companies hire illegals because they work “off the books”…paid in cash…and they work cheaper. Then, the illegal has lots of anchor babies and signs THEM up for welfare. They give birth in hospitals and are visited by illegal alien supporters, who get them signed up for WIC, food stamps, welfare, section 8 housing, etc….all of this is paid for by YOUR tax money..and mine. I think that’s what the poster meant by “subsidizing”.
The ones who owned homes, many as states are passing laws to get rid of illegals, are runnign and leaving the homes, and that, in large part, is where the Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae bomb came from. And now, you and I and all the other law-abiding, American taxpayers will foot THAT bill too.
We pay property taxes, which pay school taxes, but by law, every child in America (even illegals) is entitled to an education….you and I pay for it and they DEMAND that we teach them in their native tongue. The bigger problemm with that is, most people from mexico and countries south of that don’t speak the same dialect of Spanish, so the first thing we have to do is teach them Spanish. In the meantime, AMERICAN CHILDREN aren’t being taught because the teacher is very busy teaching children who don’t belong here Spanish…so she can teach them in American schools in a foreign language. Then, in some states, those children grow up and move onto college at “in state” tuition rates…but if an AMERICAN has a child who wants to go to an out-of-state college, the AMERICAN pays higher tuition rates, part of which goes to cover the cost of the illegals’ childrens’ education.
This is a nightmare for AMERICA AND AMERICANS…and we had better wake up before it’s too late.

Well yeah, you are leaving yourself wide open.
We need to get rid of those programs [Medicare, Social Security, welfare, etc] all together. This country cannot afford it anymore.
As far as “cheap labor” goes, businesses are struggling to keep their doors open and remain somewhat competitive. We need to relieve the tax burden on these companies and eliminate the minimum wage.
Regarding Cedar Point, did they do anything illegal by hiring kids that were not American? Is it that wrong to do that? And if you have such a problem with it, are you still going there?

Price tag for care of drug war patients at Thomason $1 million
Times staff report
Article Launched: 07/24/2008 12:12:51 PM MDT
The price tag to provide medical care and security for the public at Thomason Hospital is around $1 million after 22 people suspected to be wounded in connection with the drug wars in Mexico were transported to the hospital for treatment this year.
Hospital officials, Commissioners Court and local law enforcement met on Thursday to discuss the issue of safety at the hospital, procedures for allowing the wounded people to cross the border and who should pay for the treatment and security costs.
County and hospital officials will travel to Washington, D.C. next week to discuss the issue with delegates from El Paso and the leaders of federal agencies involved, such as Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

I made the mistake of trying to do some business in Mexico, and it was an eye opener, talking with some of the elite, who really screw over those who are willing to work in border factories where NAFTA sent our jobs, for $5 a day. These pompous a**es were laughing, and I was all crazy eyed yelling, “HOW IN THE HELL CAN THEY BUY A COUPLE BEERS AFTER WORK?!” To which they explained that their costs of living are low, since the government supplies them with everything they need… Bulllll S**tttt!
The border towns are insane, with heavily armed military types patrolling, and I’m wondering whose side they’re on, and there are bullet holes all over the place.
Anyway, here in L.A. county, the hospitals are closing down like crazy, because the illegals use the emergency rooms as their primary care providers.
By law, if you walk into an E.R. you can’t be turned away.
But when the E.R.’s are full of illegals whose little kid has the sniffles, if you’re dying from a heart attack and are brought in in an ambulance, YOU can be turned away when the full sign is up.
The feds force the schools, hospitals and everything else to welcome illegals with open arms, but don’t pay for it.
California is drowning in red ink, and you can bet your a** the rest of the country will be seeing the same thing shortly, since our politicians don’t have the balls to do anything about the situation.
Then driving is nuts!
If an illegal hits your car, they just gather their belongings from the car and walk away. They’re in the wind…
If YOU hit a car load of illegals, you can be assured that they will have no difficulty in finding an attorney and doctor sympathetic to their plight.

But we force our states and our local communities to pay for the health care and pay for the education. Why wouldn’t they bring their families? And because of our economic conditions, we do need workers. But if we had a truly free market economy, the illegal immigrants would not be the scapegoat. First they removed the Blacks from traditional jobs in the food and hotel industries, by working for less.
Then once all of the Blacks were out, they went on strike demanding higher wages in the range of something ten to twelve dollars an hour, and protection from the INS!!!

Dan S. I have been reading for a couple of years what a mess California is in. Had we had the internet back then, more Americans would have been aware of what was going on out there. I have seen MANY instances where Americans are leaving California in droves to escape the nightmare that state has become. I’m so sorry.
And I’ve been to mexico…I used to live in Tucson. I’ve seen the fat mamacitas sitting in the shade while they send their babies following Americans down the street with their little hands out, begging. One time, I was waiting to cross back over to the U.S. and there was a young woman ahead of me and a fat old mamacita sitting in the shade with HER hand out. The young woman dropped some change in the fat lady’s hand. I had sunglasses on, so the fat lady didn’t know I was watching her. She looked in her hand and saw what the young American woman had given her and shot her a look that should have dropped the young American in her tracks. The fat mexican woman didn’t think the young American woman had given her ENOUGH!!
I’ve been sexually molested in what passes for a “jewelry store” there. I’ve been offered pot to buy in another shop. On top of it all, there are the international gangs of illegals that have a great many of the residents of So. Cal. living in terror.
These are full blown terrorists controlling the prisons and streets with violence that Georgie Boy Bush seems to think only exists outside of our borders.
THEN!!! Mexico, being the civil country it is, won’t extradite anyone if there is a possibility that they’ll be put to death if found guilty.
So, these gangsters can cap a cop, drive across the border and thumb their noses at the U.S…
Then too, you don’t have to kill anyone to vanish into Mexico to escape justice.
The war on terrorism is right freaking here, and the good guys are getting their asses kicked!

First, and I”m not defending illegal immigrants, but you should learn the “rules of welfare” before you say they are eating it up. Illegals cannot get any type of assistance UNLESS they are pregnant, and then it is JUST for the birth, not much of anything else. If you entered the US after 1996 and don’t have your citizenship, you’re gonna have a hard day getting anything from the welfare office.
As to getting “us Americans” to go to work, good luck with that. I see it on the daily how stinking lazy and ignorant people are. “Well, if my food stamps are going down because I have a job now, I’m quitting my job so I can get my food stamps back!” Really? Seriously, yes, I hear this comment so often it makes me want to puke in my mouth. I’m not taking anything away from the real, hard-working people who justifiably earn a living everyday, some working 2-3 jobs to support them & their family. I will tell you this though, it seems for every 1 person I see bustin’ their butt to do so, there are 50-60 sitting on that same arse not willing to do anything. I’m not totally against welfare, the medical programs are great for those who either are not offered it through their employer or who just can’t afford it, but those people are working. That welfare reform bullcrap that happened a few years ago, putting time limits on some things, pshhh, that’s a bunch of crock…These people will “work” for practically nothing, then when their time limit expires, they return to sitting on their butts, collecting the welfare that doesn’t require them to do anything, getting section 8 where they pay little to no rent & get a check to help their utility costs & get free medical; won’t cooperate with child support most likely cuz the other parent is still living there…Show up pregnant again, same daddy, but they don’t know where he is…you wanna get mad about the illegals, sit behind my desk for a day and see how dispcable (sp?) our country can be…

I’ve talked to quite a few social workers who tell me they are not ALLOWED to ask about citizenship! You’re so wrong. They pop out anchor babies like popcorn too and they’re signed up for all the bennies before they even leave the hospital! Remember that all chidren born in the U.S. are now issued a SS# before they leave…so the parents can use that too.
And as far as Americans on welfare goes, I’m against that too, but I’d rather spend my tax money ANY day supporting a lazy American than a crooked illegal who doesn’t even BELONG in our nation. We have enough dead weight…true enough, but I’ll be DAMNED if I want taxation without representation.

Most previous studies have focused on the state and local level and have examined only costs or tax payments, but not both. Based on Census Bureau data, this study finds that, when all taxes paid (direct and indirect) and all costs are considered, illegal households created a net fiscal deficit at the federal level of more than $10 billion in 2002. We also estimate that, if there was an amnesty for illegal aliens, the net fiscal deficit would grow to nearly $29 billion.
Among the findings:
Households headed by illegal aliens imposed more than $26.3 billion in costs on the federal government in 2002 and paid only $16 billion in taxes, creating a net fiscal deficit of almost $10.4 billion, or $2,700 per illegal household.
Among the largest costs are Medicaid ($2.5 billion); treatment for the uninsured ($2.2 billion); food assistance programs such as food stamps, WIC, and free school lunches ($1.9 billion); the federal prison and court systems ($1.6 billion); and federal aid to schools ($1.4 billion).
With nearly two-thirds of illegal aliens lacking a high school degree, the primary reason they create a fiscal deficit is their low education levels and resulting low incomes and tax payments, not their legal status or heavy use of most social services.
On average, the costs that illegal households impose on federal coffers are less than half that of other households, but their tax payments are only one-fourth that of other households.
Many of the costs associated with illegals are due to their American-born children, who are awarded U.S. citizenship at birth. Thus, greater efforts at barring illegals from federal programs will not reduce costs because their citizen children can continue to access them.
If illegal aliens were given amnesty and began to pay taxes and use services like households headed by legal immigrants with the same education levels, the estimated annual net fiscal deficit would increase from $2,700 per household to nearly $7,700, for a total net cost of $29 billion.
Costs increase dramatically because unskilled immigrants with legal status — what most illegal aliens would become — can access government programs, but still tend to make very modest tax payments.
Although legalization would increase average tax payments by 77 percent, average costs would rise by 118 percent.
The fact that legal immigrants with few years of schooling are a large fiscal drain does not mean that legal immigrants overall are a net drain — many legal immigrants are highly skilled.
The vast majority of illegals hold jobs. Thus the fiscal deficit they create for the federal government is not the result of an unwillingness to work.
The results of this study are consistent with a 1997 study by the National Research Council, which also found that immigrants’ education level is a key determinant of their fiscal impact.
A Complex Fiscal Picture
Welfare use. Our findings show that many of the preconceived notions about the fiscal impact of illegal households turn out to be inaccurate. In terms of welfare use, receipt of cash assistance programs tends to be very low, while Medicaid use, though significant, is still less than for other households. Only use of food assistance programs is significantly higher than that of the rest of the population. Also, contrary to the perceptions that illegal aliens don’t pay payroll taxes, we estimate that more than half of illegals work “on the books.” On average, illegal households pay more than $4,200 a year in all forms of federal taxes. Unfortunately, they impose costs of $6,950 per household.

Allmoney, the rest is at the link if you care to learn. Too many Americans make assumptions without really knowing. You and I might not CHEAT the system but these illegals sure will!! I’ve studied this on a daily basis for over two years now and I know what I’m talking about in most instances, this one included.

The vehicle of choice for an illegal alien is the SUV. They especially like the Escalade. They like to drive them to mexico on vacations and show off to their friends there, thereby encouraging MORE of them to invade our nation.
You don’t think they drive those Escalades making minimum wage picking tomatoes, do you? lol Think about it…all it takes is common sense once you know what they’re all about. But you do have to learn about their tactics first and the only way to do that is read stories you will NEVER find in the mainstream media. Never.
My son drives an Escalade…he makes 70 grand a year and is single. Do you really think some poor illegal alien living in poverty conditions can afford that? They do it by taking jobs, living 25 to a single family home, partitioning off their garages and renting them out to MORE illegals and cheating the system. W-E-L-F-A-R-E.

Here’s ONE county, in ONE state in ONE month…now…multiply that times all the counties in all the states times ONE year…tell me what you come up with. This county is now trying to get the Federal government (you and me) to help them dig out of the financial hole they dug for themselves.
County Spends $36 Million On Welfare For Illegals In May
Thursday, 03 July 2008
Antonovich says the costs are creating a “devastating impact” on the County.
New statistics from the Department of Public Social Services reveal that illegal aliens and their families in Los AngelesCounty collected over $36 million in welfare and food stamp allocations in May 2008. These findings were announced by Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.
Twenty five percent of the all welfare and food stamps benefits is going directly to the children of illegal aliens. Illegals collected over $19 million in welfare assistance for May 2008 and over $16 million in monthly food stamp allocations, for a projected annual cost of $432 million.
“Illegal immigration continues to have a devastating impact on Los Angeles County taxpayers,” said Antonovich. “With $220 million for public safety, $400 million for healthcare, and $432 million in welfare allocations, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year – not including the millions of dollars for education.”

johnbear - You are SO wrong! Americans DO want those jobs, but the employers don’t want to follow the LAWS! There is a law called MINIMUM WAGE that employers must pay, as well as ovetrtime and benefits. Any employer caught employing illegal aliens should face the full penalties of skirting the law. Send them all back. GO ICE! Crack down on the foreign restauraunts, landscapers, construction, meat packing. it is not only an econimic issue, but also a health issue! Do you want someone who has never been vaccinated and swam over here through a sewage river to fix your food? NOT ME!

And, MyLyria, speaking of diseases:
CDC: increased TB due to immigration; others: tropical diseases due to immigrants, others
From the AP as printed in the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/22/AR2008072201902.html
Quote:
Tuberculosis cases continue to fall in the United States, but some immigrants have disturbingly high rates of the disease, according to a study released Tuesday that called for more aggressive action… TB rates were highest among residents from lower Africa and parts of Southeast Asia. Most drug-resistant TB cases also were from foreign-born residents, the study noted…
The study is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and will be published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), so it’s pretty solid.
And, on June 25 the Los Angeles Times discussed another study: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-sci-tropical25-2008jun25,0,7992144.story from Dr. Peter Hotez, “chairman of George Washington University’s department of microbiology, immunology and tropical disease” and “published in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases”:
Quote:
Despite plummeting mortality rates for most infectious diseases over the last century, a group of largely overlooked bacterial, viral and parasitic infections is still plaguing the nation’s poor… …Many of the diseases are typically associated with tropical developing countries [and] have become significant public health problems in the United States. In the Los Angeles area, a pork tapeworm infection called cysticercosis which spreads in crowded, unsanitary conditions, accounts for 10% of seizures resulting in emergency room visits… The diseases are largely concentrated in poverty-stricken regions, including Appalachia, inner cities, the Mississippi Delta and the border with Mexico…
It’s important to note that the second study seems to indicate that some of the conditions may not be related to immigration, however it would be incredibly surprising if the pork bit isn’t directly related to immigration.
Note also that supporters of illegal activity like the ADL seem to think it’s “hate” to point out that some immigrants are indeed bringing some diseases into the U.S., so feel free to turn those responsible for the reports above and for reporting on them into your local hate speech monitoring center.

Don’t you hope you don’t get a cold this year, or get a hankering for some bbq chicken this summer?

If these people were still coming in through Ellis Island and being checked by physicians, they’d be sent home for a cure. Instead, they don’t GET cured and pass this scourge on to American citizens.

Illegal in More Ways than One
Identity theft in America goes hand and hand with illegal immigration.
As everyone knows, America is experiencing an epidemic of identity theft. In the last five years alone, complaints to the Federal Trade Commission from U.S. residents who have had their identity stolen have skyrocketed 60 percent, to 258,427 in 2007—one-third of all consumer fraud complaints that the commission receives. What’s less well understood, however, is how illegal immigration is helping to fuel this rash of crime. Seeking access to jobs, credit, and driver’s licenses, many undocumented aliens are using the personal data of real Americans on forged documents. The immigrants’ identity theft has become so pervasive that the need to combat it is “a disturbing front in the war against illegal immigration,” according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The FTC’s latest statistics help show why. The top five states in terms of reported identity theft in 2007 all have large immigrant populations—the border states of Arizona, California, and Texas, as well as Florida and Nevada. People who pilfer legitimate identities in these states are much more likely than in other parts of the country to use them to gain employment unlawfully—the most common reason that illegal aliens steal personal information. In Arizona, for instance, 36 percent of all identity theft is for employment purposes, compared with only 5 percent in Maine, a state with far fewer illegal aliens. “To many law enforcement leaders in Arizona, this suggests that Arizona’s identity-theft epidemic is directly linked to the problem of illegal immigration,” says a recent report by Identity Theft 911, an Arizona company that helps businesses and individuals protect themselves.
Government investigations have only begun to uncover the extent of the crime wave. When ICE agents raided six Swift meat-processing plants in December 2006, they found widespread evidence of fraud involving the use of real people’s identities; the feds eventually charged 148 illegal aliens in the case with crimes related to identity theft. In the first year and a half after Arizona created a special unit to deal with identity theft, investigators said that they were able to purchase more than 1,000 phony documents that made use of real people’s identities. A so-called three-pack—a Social Security card, a driver’s license, and a permanent-resident card—costs on average just $160 in the state.
Government statistics probably grossly underestimate the size of the problem. Many local police departments don’t track identity theft accurately, and the FTC only reports complaints that it receives. By combining data on complaints with FTC consumer surveys—which show that far more people have had their identity stolen than report it—Identity Theft 911 estimates that in Arizona alone, some 1.57 million people, or a quarter of the state’s population, have been victims over the last six years. About one-fifth are children—whose Social Security numbers are especially valuable targets, since the kids usually aren’t employed, ma
