‘Save Our Sons’ still needs volunteers

ELYRIA — The “Save Our Sons African-American Health Project” still needs volunteers to participate in a six-week study of how black men can be healthier.

The Lorain County Urban League, Morehouse School of Medicine and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals are sponsoring the study because black men have the shortest life expectancy of any ethnic group, living about eight fewer years than the national average.

Volunteers ages 18 and older can call Project Director Mike Ferrer at (440) 336-1501 or (440) 323-3364 to participate in the study. About 20 more participants are needed by Monday.

Volunteers will work with trainers through September doing athletics, getting nutrition and cooking tips from chefs and learning about diabetes and other disease prevention. They’ll also get $1,500 worth of free health tests.

French exchange students need homes

A group of 30 French exchange students is planning to visit Northeast Ohio for 19 days in August.

There’s just one problem: There aren’t enough host families, and the situation is urgent, World Exchange State Program Director Linda Stryczny said. Hosts are needed for 12 girls and boys ages 15 to 17.

All of the students can speak English. Stryczny said they want to learn about everyday life in the Midwest.

The students are insured and come with pocket money. Their trip includes two prearranged day trips.

Anyone interested in providing them with a place to stay should call Stryczny at (440) 781-9989 or e-mail lindastrizz@yahoo.com.
