Pilot lands on rural Ohio road

SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) — A rural road in northern Ohio became an airstrip for a pilot from Wyoming, who made an emergency landing when his small plane’s engine died.

Fifty-six-year-old Dennis Volger says his 20-foot RV-6A aircraft made a “nice soft landing” Tuesday evening in Erie County’s Groton Township.

The pilot from Lander, Wyo., had been in contact with Cleveland Air Control, so the State Highway Patrol and the local fire department moved in quickly to block the quiet road lined with cornstalks where Volger brought his plane down.

Volger was headed to Lorain County Regional Airport for a visit with family in the Cleveland area. He says he had fuel, so he’s not sure what went wrong with the engine.

The Highway Patrol said he would not be charged.
