Lorain officer cleared of two charges

Brad Dicken | The Chronicle-Telegram

Investigation continues on remaining two charges

LORAIN — Police Sgt. James Wolford has been cleared of wrongdoing in two of the four complaints pending against him.

Lt. Jim Rohner said he is still investigating two other complaints against Wolford.

In the first complaint that Wolford was cleared of, he had been accused of getting into a bar fight with Lorain County Jail Corrections Officer Thomas Pruitt, who said Wolford attacked him during an encounter July 1 at Jack & Diane’s bar in Lorain.

Pruitt told Rohner that Wolford confronted him and grabbed his genitalia and thumb, according to the report on the incident. Pruitt said he pulled away and punched Wolford, not realizing he was a police officer.

The confrontation was broken up by other bar patrons.

Wolford told Rohner that he saw Pruitt trying to grab a woman and confronted him about his behavior. As Wolford was turning to leave, he told Rohner that Pruitt grabbed him by the throat and he pushed him away.

Wolford also said he had no idea Pruitt was a corrections officer until after the fight was broken up.

Rohner said he investigated the matter despite Pruitt’s efforts to drop it because of a previous encounter he had with another Lorain police officer, Corey Earl.

Pruitt had gotten a civil stalking protection order against Earl after a confrontation between the two men at another Lorain bar earlier this year.

Earl was later found to have violated department policy when he complained about Pruitt to three sheriff’s captains in a threatening manner, Police Chief Cel Rivera has said.

Rohner concluded that the confrontation between Pruitt and Wolford didn’t violate any departmental policies, in part because of the differing accounts of the two men and another witness and because neither man wanted to pursue the issue.

In the other complaint, charges of disorderly conduct, domestic violence, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest were dropped against Tannika Ali after Wolford failed to appear for a trial. Without Wolford, prosecutors had no case.

Wolford told Rohner that he was off sick and never received the subpoena to appear for Ali’s trial on July 7, the report said. He also said that he makes it a point to attend court hearings because he gets extra pay for doing so. Rohner concluded there was no way to prove Wolford had received the subpoena.

In another case, Rohner said he has completed his investigation into Officer Jack Brown, who is accused of using a racial slur and spitting at someone at a July 4 birthday party, and is now awaiting a decision from Rivera on the matter.

You know, these certain cops that seem to “stay” in the spotlight…have you ever heard about staying at home on your off time or doing something other than going to a bar? To me if my office and myself were under scrutiny, I’d try keeping my nose clean and myself out of trouble…JMO

This is the perfect example of cops covering for cops. They think that they are above the law. I am tired of the LPD covering for bad cops it adds shame to the names of all the good officers in the department. Dt. Rohner actually wants us to believe that there was no way to determine if this cop was served with a subpoena! Why don’t you asked the sheriff who served the subpoena on the cop and keep the B.S. to yourself?

It is good to see this officer has been cleared of these charges and I am sure he will be cleared of the other charges also. Officer Wolford has done alot of good things for many of the citizens of Lorain and they should not be overshadowed by accusations. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? It would be nice if the paper also reported equally on the good things that the Lorain Police Department does on a daily basis. Hang in there Officer Wolford.

We all know that rohner will never find anyone that could get him in trouble guilty. He didn’t find him not guilty because he is one of the boyz, not Wolford, but Wolford has seen plenty and would stick it to them. Believe me Wolford knew who he was fighting with in the bar he knew it was coreys rival and it was all over the station in two seconds.
Believe me also when i tell you that if one of the other officers had made that sad excuse he was sick and didn’t get the subpoena rohner would have NEVER believe that. Mark my words when you read about it next time with a not so liked officer, or the officer without someones skeletons says the same thing.
Let me ask you how many times have you seen an officer out to eat in an restaurant not many for me but when i do i am glad they are there (I see them at the restaurants in sheffield all the time) added safety if you ask me. Well rohner rides again officers can’t even have some breakfast without him running to the chief. Do you know that our officers work twelve and a half hour shifts and only get a thirty minute for lunch and that is only if the dispatchers allow them to eat? They don’t even have bathrooms to use. Can you ride for that long and not have restrooms available for you, could you ride that long and only have thirty minutes to eat? That department is crazy and don’t think for one minute that Super, rohner, the chief, Davies, and the detectives haven’t gone to eat and haven’t called out. If the officers are not ignoring there calls then i don’t think that stopping to eat is a problem its not like there visiting their girlfriends CHIEF and ROHNER.
We need an independent internal investigator and a new union president that isn’t a cop one that will stand up for our officers and protect them from harassment from their own department. A police officer can not be unbias in this position and isn’t true help for the officers which is what the union is for.

formemo:
The first part of your paragraph is true. Wolford knew who he was fighting. Actually from what I heard it was not much of a fight though. Wolford was on the ground in seconds. Secondly, let’s not forget that the patrolman are the ones who wanted to work 12 hour shifts. they can stop at friends house, family members houses, and even their own house if they are in their district. Don’t make it sound like these guys are driving around for 12 hours straight with no bathroom and no down time. Every shift has their down time and busy time. I know that their are also times when they are going from call to call. Then there are times when things are slow. It evens itself out. I do agree about the independent investigator though.

“Wolford was on the ground in seconds.”

If this is true, it’s further evidence, in my mind, that Pruitt wasn’t telling the truth.

If Wolford grabs a guy by the gonads you would think that someone else in the bar would have witnessed that act or hear the screaming.

Then for someone getting their balls crushed to put the person smashing their nuts “on the ground in seconds” that would have to be freaking Superman or a guy with no feeling in their testicles.

I have no love for LPD or Wolford, but I’d bet he never grabed anything of Pruitt’s and was put down so quickly because he was sucker punched.

That’s why nobody saw anything leading up to the fight.

Does any one have a problem with the fact that a least one of these guys broke the law they swore to uphold? Does anyone have a problem with the fact that LPD will arrest a citizen for looking at them wrong, but they go out to the bars and engage in fist fights that could lead to someone being seriously hurt? I am ashamed to say that I have to rely on these guys to keep me safe. I am sure they all have done some good as police officers, but if they break the law they should be held accountable. Since LPD is so corrupt and refuses to take care of its mess, the Feds could come in and clean house.

There’s having your nuts grabbed…

…and then there’s having your nuts GRABBED!

Two different animals altogether.

I had someone try and tear my balls off in a fight once.

Best I could do was to choke him out. Couldn’t move fast enough to get in a good punch.

Anyway, if someone grabs you by the nuts, if there are any people around they know without a doubt that you got your nuts grabbed, unless it’s some kind of covert Gay thing, I’d imagine.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever had your balls squeezed (in a bad way) in your adult life? It really hurts for decades, and I’m guessing I’m gonna feel it, on and off, for the rest of my life.

Have you seen Pruitt? the guy is built like a mac truck. Maybe he juices, you know what that does to your package.
Secondly, yes they voted to work twelve hour shifts but not everyone wanted to do it. Thanks to the officers that work in amherst on their days off. Only the chosen people can stop at their friends and family. If you have to worry about going to the restroom at a familys home because you will get written up then the station should provide a place to go. Other wise you are accused of staying there instead of patrolling. I have seen eli at his house and his ex’s house, for long periods of time never in trouble but other officers have been told that they spend to much time at family or friends homes. I certainly don’t believe that a write up is deserved for eating breakfast as long as they are going to their calls. I have seen capt and sarg that go out to eat and never call out why haven’t they been written up? This place is crazy and the chief and rohner have gone over board. They are nit picking stupid shit and need to get off patrols back. They are creating undo stress and if an officer gets hurt on duty they will be held responsable for the atmosphere they have created. Officers are afraid to do anything because they will be the next target.

Anybody can stop at a family or friends house, c’mon, I know you know that. The station does provide a place where they can go to the bathroom, it’s called the police station. One thing that was not mentioned was that some of the officers that were caught at the restraunt were not in their district. Now if something happens in their district while they are somewhere else who is to blame for that? If I go someplace to eat and I see a police officer there I feel safe. If I see two, that’s fine. When I see more then that I am wondering who is out patrolling the streets.

Formemo!!! Quit your crying. It was the majority who voted for the 12 hour shifts. Further, there are many places you can go relieve yourself in Lorain. While I was on the road, you could go to Spitzer’s in District 1, and the South Lorain Substation in District 4, and the station, if you worked 2-3. As for lunch, if you felt you needed more time, stopping at BK going through the drive thru, was more then adequate. I do agree with Blade, that when more then two are congregated at a eatery, that’s an issue.

As for the Chief cleaning house, it’s about time. Stanley, Jessie, Toothman, and Emilio all deserved what they got, and then some. Further, if the Chief or rohner want to take a extra few minutes to digest their meals, they should. Do you realize how many people come up to the chief when he’s out for lunch. Many times, he’s had to go home to eat, so he’s not bothered.

Also, when working the road, if i worked a district where my family lived, I saw no problem stopping for a short visit, it’s just that some guys make a nuisance out of themselves. By the way, leave Andujar alone. If he wan’ts to stop to see his ex, let him. I think your jealous formemo.

i also think, that Sivert did the best job as lodge pres. when the chief made him detective, it was well deserved, as well as k-9. ernie, should run again for pres. he seems to get along with the chief the best.

Blade sorry there is no sub station in south thank to some people that was lost. Its a long way and out of district for south to go downtown to the station. Not everyone has the pass code for the west side either. Not everyone has family in the district they are patrolling.

leland why don’t you stick to your praise of your immoral chief? Do you think that your beloved chief and rohner are the only ones bothered during meals? You are an idiot. Next you will say that if Farley wants to spend time at his house instead of patrolling that is fine too. Oh yeah that is what he does. Eli shouldn’t stop at his house or the ex if no one else has the right then neither does he. And finally how many times has the chief been out of the city will on duty, mister I made $50000 in overtime that wasn’t approved. But i guess he is the chief so it is okay. Keep sucking up leland and lets see where your head rolls when the feds show up. One final thought we don’t need any president that is the chiefs friend we have enough of that.

Dear Citizens please note that two more of our officers will be leaving this year, one detective and one patrol Another clear sign of the trouble in the LPD.

Why are the higher rank in the police dept. after Sgt,Wolford? They have determined that they are going to get rid of him one way or another, The man can’t pass gas without some arsewipe catching it in a mason jar.

Maybe someone should put alittle effort in checking the backgrounds of the Generals and publish that.. (I am working on that!!)

Could it be the Lpd is mad about. and trying to get revenge for:

“Wolford sued Rivera, the city and four police officers in 1997 in Lorain County Common Pleas Court for $2 million plus court and attorney fees for what his attorney called embarrassment and malice.

He claimed Rivera, the officers and the city were ”angered” he was reinstated, according to the lawsuit.

I think Thr LPD needs a Citizens commitee to investigate and recommend action along with the police dept and make it s.o,p…..or a better internal investigation process

Its not right for 2 people doing the same thing and one getting a lettter or verbal and the other getting a suspension. MY Thoughts..!!

Blade, I totally agree with you! Jim is a substandard officer. His record reads like the bad news bears in training. He about drowned that guy in mace, in 1994, and was arrested for dv in 1995, in which the wife backed out of filing charges. Rivera needs to clean house, starting with Wolford. It’s time they fire him. I also think Jack Brown, Emilio, and that perv Stanley should all be fired, and put away for a long time.

I can honestly say, I have very few infractions in my jacket. It is the chief who taught me to be the officer I am, and showed me how to keep my nose clean, like he did for years. I am so happy Rohner, and the chief are finally clearing the herd of the poison which has rotted LPD for years.

Sure, people can say there is dukee in the upper mangemen’t past, but all of the mistakes they made were minor, and administrative in nature. Keep looking, because you’ll be looking a long time for nothing!!!!

Since it seems that we have “:officers” writing here, and would know the” ropes” so to speak…i have a question to ask…let us say “hypothetically”"…if an officer were to site let us say another’s officers relative for DUI…and then records go missing (wala) it is magic. Would there not be a record with the state, that had that breatherlizer test on record… and not “Wala” They could not make that disappear too could they? hmmmmmmmmm…food for thought (hypothectially).

And Yes Leland, I think it does make a difference. It is called respect. I hear you like to get reactions from people, is that your way of getting attention. I think it is in poor taste and you do not honor this officer with slinging your mud.
do not get it…where is the brotherhood amongst you. Has it gone with all the officer that have reitred and or died. It is a shame to hear you speak so ill of one another.
As citizens I feel we do not have a prayer.

Just one quick question?

Who the heck uses the word DUKEE?

Dukee?

That word alone will identify this pathetic retard once and for all.

I don’t want to see any complaints about my post. If anybody defends this dumb bastard I will come after you next.

This is a prime example of somebody who needs their baby making parts ripped out.

How many times have I heard, California should fall into the ocean and be done with? Too many times to count. The people who made this suggestion never saw Lorain, Ohio in all it’s grimy glory. I don’t think it would change their opinion about California, but maybe next time they would say,

“I wish California would slide off into the ocean. Oh, and Lorain into the lake.” Hey! At least Lorain doesn’t have shoes hanging from the telephone pole wires.

People, start looking into stories of bad cops who were caught across the nation. From city police, DEA, to Border Patrol officers. Notice a pattern?

Somebody on here mentioned gangs have took over the streets because of dirty cops. Has very little to do with that reason. The police have been castrated by politically correctness. I call it political insanity. Pull over and/or arrest one too many minorities and you are racial profiling. Doesn’t matter who commits most of the crime. Somebody arrested has a bruise and they were beaten by racist cops. They hear the screams of racism all the time. There are few officers, when compared to the ones actually convicted, who are found guilty of racial anything. Time and money wasted. This is why there is more crime. This is why it will continue to get worse.

Four years ago I watched the following happen at a gas station down here. Two American police officers of Mexican descent were arresting another Mexican American. What did he start hollering to friends? Yep! The cops were racist. I started laughing at that.
