Drunken woman nearly drowns in Lorain

LORAIN — A drunken woman who passed out on an inflatable raft on a Lake Erie beach nearly drowned Thursday afternoon before nearby sunbathers could pull her to safety.
“She was there for a while,” said Danielle Williams of Lorain, who helped drag the woman out of the water about 4:45 p.m. at Century Park. “We didn’t know if she was dead.”
Jodi Horinek of Lorain said the woman, who was alone, had been lying on her side, dangling partially off the raft with part of her face submerged in the lake.
Her son, 15-year-old Charles Horinek, said police charged down the beach, but when they reached the woman they had a hard time waking her. He said officers resorted to flailing the woman’s arms and palming her face to try to rouse her.
Zachary Gerber, also of Lorain, said the woman had been mixing wine and beer. It wasn’t long before she passed out.
Police on the scene said they disposed of the alcohol in the cooler, and the woman was taken to a waiting ambulance and then to Community Regional Medical Center.
The shift officer in charge did not return phone calls seeking the identity or status of the woman.
Williams said she thinks the woman will probably be all right after nearly drowning.
She said the woman must have swallowed a lot of water, because she started spitting it all up as she pulled onto the sand.
