Meet the candidates
The Avon Lake Democrats are sponsoring a 2008 election kick-off party and fifth annual picnic July 22 at The Lake House, 32756 Lake Road in Avon Lake.
The will be opportunity to meet the party’s candidates and get involved in the fall election. The event is open to the public and free of charge, although donations will be accepted.

Avon Lake class of ’78 reunion planned
The Avon Lake High School class of 1978 will reunite Oct. 3 to cheer on the Shoremen at Homecoming and Oct. 4 at Amber Oaks Restaurant in Sheffield Lake.
Tickets to the game are $6 and will be available for pick-up starting at 6:30 p.m. at the stadium caboose.
Doors will open at Amber Oaks the following night at 6 p.m. and a casual dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person and there will also be a cash bar.
Blocks of rooms are reserved at the Westlake Holiday Inn and Fairfield Inn and Suites in Avon. To receive the special rate of $89 per night plus tax, contact Holiday Inn at (800) 762-7416 or Fairfield Inn and Suites at (440) 934-7445 by Sept. 3.

Library seeks historical photos
Avon Lake Public Library and Avon Lake Historical Society are looking for historical photographs for use in a forthcoming book from Arcadia Publishing.
Librarians want pictures of people, buildings, places and events in Avon Lake from any time period. They should be original prints, postcards, line art or negatives.
Photographs may be donated, or librarians can scan and return them. A photograph release form, which can be found at www.avonlakeschools.com, must be filled out.

Summer market
The Avon Lake Landmark Preservation Society is hosting its third annual summer market 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 26 at Veterans Memorial Park. Several shops, boutiques and artists have been invited. Sweet Melissa’s of Rocky River will provide the food.
Henkel recognized for supporting literacy
Henkel Corp. of Avon was given a Champion Cultivator Award on June 17 for supporting Seeds of Literacy, a nonprofit program providing free basic education and GED preparation for adults.
Seeds of Literacy was started by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Cleveland, and today has eight sites citywide and a resource center at 3104 West 25th St.
