Elyria Relay for Life takes place at EC today

Jason Hawk | The Chronicle-Telegram

ELYRIA — Between 200 and 300 volunteers will be making laps around the Elyria Catholic High School track for 18 hours starting 9 a.m. today to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The annual Elyria Relay for Life aims to raise $85,000. Last year, volunteers collected almost $80,000 for cancer research and support services.

“Before my father got cancer, I always asked what good it did to raise money for the cancer society,” said Relay Chair Jim L. Gordon. “It’s not like they ever find a cure.”

He said his attitude changed after his father, Elyria Baptist Church pastor Jim G. Gordon, died of cancer in 2006.

Jim L. Gordon said the American Cancer Society helped him find support groups to cope with the loss of his father.

Today’s event has a television theme, and volunteers will dress like characters from “The Flintstones,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” “I Love Lucy,” “Golden Girls” and other iconic shows.

A luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. in honor of cancer survivors, who can eat free with one guest.

They can get the same deal at 6 p.m. at a survivor dinner.

A candlelight service will be held at the track at 9 p.m.

It’s not too late to donate. Checks made out to the Elyria Relay for Life will be accepted today at Elyria Catholic.

Checks can also be sent to the American Cancer Society in the Elyria group’s name through Aug. 21 at P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 3123-1718.
