Today is Lorain County Pride Day, and volunteers will help spruce up their communities throughout the county.
Amherst
Volunteers are asked to meet at the Main Street Community Center, 255 Park Ave., and come equipped with rakes, shovels and gloves. The plans include cleaning, planting and mulching around City Hall and picking up litter.
Avon
Projects are scheduled at various locations. They include the Girl and Boy Scouts cleaning and planting at Avon Center, at the library, at Northgate Park, at the Community Center, at state Route 83 and Detroit Road, at the Methodist Church and at French Creek.
Avon Lake
Projects will be going on all over the city. Some of the things on the list are to clean and mulch Beach Park, to seal the brick wall at the Peter Miller House, to clean up Miller Road Park, Bleser Park and Sunset Park and to clean and plant at Weiss Park, City Hall, Folger Home, Russ Lynch Park and Troy Elementary School.
Carlisle Township
There will be building and grounds cleanup, weeding and planting at Community Park, Butternut Park ballfields, East Carlisle ballfields and the East Carlisle building.
Elyria
Main Street Elyria and the Rotary Clubs of Elyria will plant in Historic Downtown Elyria on Saturday morning. Volunteers from both organizations will fill the planters through out the downtown with flowers. Weather permitting, 48 planters are scheduled for Saturday’s project. The plan is to begin at 9 a.m. and finish around noon, and volunteers are appreciated and should meet at the Main Street Elyria office, 104 Middle Ave.
Also planned is the removal and replacement of old tire mulch at North and West recreation centers and litter cleanup on the trails and river banks of Cascade Park.
Elyria Township
Crews will be weeding, mulching and cleaning up by the township hall and fire station.
Grafton Township
The plan is to clean and plant around township hall, Belden Park and the cemetery. There also will be a collection site for old household batteries and for flags so they can be properly disposed of.
Huntington Township
Crews will be weeding, mulching, cleaning and planting at township hall, cleaning Baker Road and behind Findley State Park, and working on the one-room school house. Lunch for volunteers will be at the Grange Hall in exchange for a donation to the food bank.
Kipton
The plan is to weed, clean, mulch and plant at the Recycling Center, at Community Park, along the Lorain County Metro Parks’ bike trail and around the pavilion and signs at Village Hall.
Lorain
Litter cleanup will be done at all city parks. Flowers will be planted at Pawlak, Central and Johnnie Wilson parks, the park next to Palace Theatre and the Charleston Village marker. Also, 10 schools will be cleaning up their grounds. The city is seeking donations of flats of flowers. The Lorain Growth Corp. will collect litter and trim trees on Broadway.
North Ridgeville
There will be weeding, cleaning and planting at City Hall and the Senior Center, cleanup at Safetyville, weeding, cleaning and planting at Teepee Garden, Second Island flowerbed, the Rock Garden and the walking path, the community cabin at South Central Park will be painted, there will be weeding, cleaning and planting at the Shady Drive ballpark and Frontier Park, the football and soccer complex, and various schools.
The day’s festivities also include a pancake breakfast 8 to 11 a.m. at the North Ridgeville Senior Center, 7327 Avon Belden Road ($5 for adults, $4.50 for seniors, $2.50 for children under 12); document shredding in the Senior Center parking lot, a tire recycling trailer at the city Service Garage on Bainbridge Road, and a garbage bin behind City Hall.
Oberlin
There will be weeding, cleaning and planting at Roadside Park, Plum Creek, in the downtown area and at the Vine Street bridge. Volunteers are invited to join the Oberlin Heritage Center staff for a grounds spruce up 9 a.m. to noon. To join, meet at the Heritage Center’s brick crossroads, wear work clothes and gloves and bring gardening tools.
Penfield Township
Weeding, cleaning and planting at all three parks and cleaning up the walking trail and the fence at the cemetery. Lunch will be provided for volunteers.
Rochester Township
Weeding, cleaning and planting will be done at Town Hall and park. Blue bags will be handed out for recycling at the pavilion. There will be a collection of car and household batteries, ink cartridges, cell phones and canned foods. Also, cloth recycling bags will be distributed.
Sheffield Lake
Crews will weed and clean Gunter and Community parks.
Sheffield Township
Crews will clean and plant around Township Hall, and there will be litter cleanup at Dunton Road, DeWitt Street wooded lot, Albany Avenue wooded lot, Lowell Avenue and the east side of Farr Avenue.
Sheffield
Weeding, cleaning, mulching and planting will be done around the municipal complex. The sign and the door at the building will be planted.
Vermilion
Crews will clean up and mulch at Exchange Park, Hanover Park, Main Street beach, Showse Park, Sherod Park, Victory Park, Rotary Park, the skate park and the swimming pool. There also will be beach cleanups at Main Street, Showse and Sherod parks. The flower boxes at city offices will be planted, the police station will be powerwashed, and there will be cleaning and planting at West Breeze and the east, west and south city entrances, on West River Road, at the intermediate school and at the YMCA. Neighbors in the Woodlands will be cleaning up in their area.
Wellington Township
Weeding, mulching and planting by the township garage, as well as collecting and recycling books, canes, wheelchairs and old cell phones. Egg cartons and batteries also will be collected.
