Lorain City Jail ready for inmates

Stephen Szucs | The Chronicle-Telegram

LORAIN — The Lorain City Jail took in its first inmate within 30 minutes of opening Thursday morning.

The jail opened promptly at 10 a.m. after months of delays and now has the capacity of holding up to 34 offenders for 12 days at a time.

“All is well that ends well,” Safety Director Phil Dore said. “I can officially say we’re open for business.”

Plumbing problems and construction delays originally postponed the opening, which had been scheduled for November. In April, scheduling conflicts with one of the state’s regional jail inspectors again delayed the opening.

The 34-bed jail is on the third floor of the police station on West Erie Avenue and cost $350,000 to renovate.

Dore said the jail will provide more on-the-road time for Lorain police officers, who, before the opening, had to drive prisoners to the Lorain County Jail in Elyria.

It’ll also act as a crime deterrent, he said.

“Now we can lock up misdemeanor offenders instead of just writing them a ticket,” Dore said.

Why no pictures? Did the first inmate get the honor of cutting the ribbon to his cell?
