Assistant prosecutor in running for Barrett vacancy

Brad Dicken | The Chronicle-Telegram

There’s some competition to replace former state Rep. Matt Barrett in Columbus.

As of Thursday morning, the deadline for applications, there were seven applicants for the Ohio House of Representatives seat Barrett, D-Amherst, resigned from last month.

Phil Saken, a spokesman for the House Democratic Caucus, said the final list of candidates would be available today.

Among those seeking the job is Assistant Lorain County Prosecutor Frank Janik, who said that after enforcing laws it would be interesting to help make them.

Janik, a former civil and defense attorney, said he already has been contacted to set up an interview next week with a selection committee.

Barrett resigned after Norwalk police and the Ohio Highway Patrol wrapped up an investigation into photos of topless women he inadvertently flashed to a Norwalk High School class during a government presentation in October.

Barrett initially blamed one of his four children, a teenage son, for the photos, but the investigation showed he not only knew the women but had asked them to send him the pictures, which they took using their cell phones.

The photos ended up on a state-issued computer memory stick that Barrett had used during his presentation and automatically loaded when he plugged the stick into a school computer.

Barrett resigned after admitting that he’d lied to party leaders in Columbus — leaving Democrats scrambling to find a replacement to finish his term and compete against Republican Terry Boose in November.
