Steve Sayers, the new Amherst Schools superintendent, stands next to his wife, Marie, and talks with Maureen Schieferstein of Amherst on Sunday at Marion L. Steele High School.

AMHERST — A few dozen parents and students met Sunday afternoon in the Marion L. Steele High School lobby to greet the district’s new superintendent, Steve Sayers.

Sayers, who will replace current superintendent Robert Boynton on Aug. 1, brought his wife, Marie, and children to the school to meet members of the community.

But they are not starting from scratch.

“Marie and I both graduated from Midview High and taught in the Keystone district,” Sayers said. “Our first home was in Amherst.”

Since then, Sayers, 44, has served as principal, athletic director and director of personnel in various districts. For the last five years, he has been superintendent of the Apple Creek district in Wayne County.

“I’m really looking forward to joining the Amherst district again,” he said. “It’s a community really dedicated to excellence.”

Sayers said his first priority would be to pass an operating levy.

“I’m very optimistic that we can get it passed,” he said.

Others in attendance expressed the need to get money for the district. Nora and Tony Cioffi both said they hoped the levy would pass quickly.

“He has a strong history in Lorain County,” Tony Cioffi said. “He’s a graduate from Lorain County Community College, and he’s taught in the district.

“He’s Lorain County true to heart.”

Sayers and his family hope to move to the district in mid-June and have children Todd, 15, Julie, 11, and Trent, 9, attend schools in the district next year.

“We’re very excited about having our children enter Amherst Schools,” Sayers said. “Just look at the state report card — it is an excellent district.”

Steele Principal Mike Gillam said he was excited to welcome Sayers to the district.

“He’s a very fair person and will be very good for the district,” Gillam said. “He’s seems to be a very hands-on superintendent.”
