Former Elyria, EC athletic director Mark McGuire wins prestigious award in first year at Solon

SOLON — There isn’t a challenge Mark McGuire isn’t willing to undertake, which is a big reason why he is being honored by his peers in the high school athletic world with the 2008 Northeast Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrator Association Athletic Director of the Year award. The group’s annual meeting meeting is scheduled for Sunday at the Sheraton Conference Center in Cuyahoga Falls.
The award is given to the athletic director who exemplifies the highest standards of his profession and who, through his influence on the lives of young people under his direction, has made significant contributions to his school and community.
McGuire left Elyria to become Solon’s athletic director this past fall after serving the Elyria Schools the past 10 years. Prior to that, McGuire was at Elyria Catholic for 21 years — 11 as AD and business manager. He was instrumental in helping organize the Northeast Ohio Conference. While at Elyria Catholic, McGuire helped get the Panthers to join the North Coast League.
McGuire previously was honored as Lorain County’s Athletic Director of the Year in 1997 and 2003.
“It’s always nice to be recognized by your peers,” said McGuire. “I’ve worked with a lot of outstanding people, outstanding coaches over the years. It’s really an award that should be shared with them.”
“He is very much a grassroots administrator who does whatever it takes to get the job done,” said Bill Schumacher, Chagrin Falls athletic director. “We thought he was very deserving of this honor. He is all about the kids and has some of the best programs for kids in the area.”
The award criteria state that the Athletic Director of the Year is “an active athletic administrator who is recognized in the community as an educational leader who maintains athletics as an integral part of the total educational program.”
McGuire, an Elyria Sports Hall of Fame inductee in 2001, is the organization’s chairman for this year’s banquet scheduled for May 3 at the Spitzer Center on the campus of Lorain County Community College. McGuire and his wife, Donna, are residents of Elyria.
