Volleyball: Magnificat’s Matia, DuBroy taking their games to college

ROCKY RIVER — Two local volleyball standouts from Magnificat High School signed national letters of intent to play college volleyball Wednesday afternoon.
Michelle Matia, a middle hitter from Westlake and a former Elyria resident, will continue her education at Xavier University in Cincinnati. Kristen DuBroy, a setter from North Olmsted, will attend Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, W.Va.
The signings took place together in the Magnificat gymnasium.
Matia will join 2006 Elyria High School graduate Kelly Ruth on the Musketeers. Ruth will be a junior outside hitter for XU this fall.
“I stayed with her when I went on my official visit,” Matia said. “She made my experience fun and enjoyable.
“She went to my grade school for three years,” Matia said. “I really didn’t know Kelly because she was older.”
Ruth’s sales job was just one reason Matia chose Xavier.
“I fell in love with the campus and the program,” she said. “All the girls were very nice, and I love the coach (Floyd Deaton). It just felt like a good fit for me.”
Xavier went 23-11 and 11-2 in the Atlantic 10. The Musketeers lost to Dayton in the final of the conference tournament.
Matia was Magnificat’s co-Most Valuable Player in 2007, along with DuBroy, after leading the Blue Streaks in kills (224) and blocks (85 solos, 148 assists). She was first team All-District II and second team Division I All-Ohio.
DuBroy made several visits to Wheeling Jesuit before deciding to attend the NCAA Division II school.
“I like the academics, the volleyball program and the girls,” DuBroy said. “I felt right at home there.”
Wheeling Jesuit was champion (18-0) of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last season.
DuBroy, the Blue Streaks’ career assist leader, was also a first team all-district pick. She had an assist average of 11.7 per game and an assist percentage of 40.6 last season for Magnificat, which was 18-4 in 2007 and was Norwalk Regional champion.
