H.S. Track: Midview’s Ebersole 3rd at state indoor meet

It wasn’t his best day, but Drew Ebersole made the most of it.
The Midview senior placed third in the shot put at the Division I state indoor meet March 15 at the University of Akron’s Athletic Field House.
Ebersole threw 55 feet, 71/2 inches on his sixth and final try. He finished within 2 inches of Brunswick senior Zach Marinucci, who won it with a toss of 55-91/2. Boardman junior Corey Linsley was second (55-81/4).
Ebersole’s previous-best throw came in the third round (54-6¼). Unfortunately, it was still short of his winning toss of 58-10 at the Findlay Open on March 8.
“It was a rough day,” said Ebersole, who had aspirations of victory. “The throwing circle seemed kind of slippery.”
Last year, Ebersole finished eighth (51-11) in the state indoor shot put.
Ebersole also finished eighth in the 25-pound weight throw at Akron with a heave of 48-9.
“It’s a little disappointing, but this is just indoors. My focus is June (the outdoor state meet),” said Ebersole. “That’s the meet that really matters.”
Elyria Catholic senior Andrew Bir was seventh (7.25) in the Division II-III 60-meter dash. Vermilion senior Nate Cremean was 13th in the Division II-III 3,200-meter run (10:11.15) and 14th in the 1,600 (4:42.92). Amherst junior Adam Kalivoda was 15th (12-6) in Division I pole vault.
The Bay High girls track team had the best performance of any local squad, finishing sixth in the Division II-III meet with 20 points behind Warrensville Heights (91) and Gilmour Academy (55).
Bay freshman Bridget Doughty was third (9.40) in the 60-meter hurdles behind Akron Buchtel senior Tiffany Tucker (9.31) and Smithville junior Karissa Dalessandro (9.39).
Bay senior Stephanie Black was fourth in the 1,600 (5:22.33) and 800 (2:26.43). Rocket junior Dayna Rohlke was fifth (5-3) in high jump. Bay senior Hannah Farver placed 11th (12:08.78) in the 3,200.
Olmsted Falls junior Katie Nageotte was fifth (10-6) in the Division I pole vault. Classmate Jackie Griswold was eighth in the shot put (34-01/4).
Magnificat sophomore Madeline Chambers of Westlake was third (5:12.96) in the Division I 1,600. Massillon Jackson senior Emily Pritt (5:07.54) was the winner.
Lake Ridge sophomore Amanda Seidel placed 10th (1:03.39) in the Division II-III 400 meters and 16th in high jump (4-8).
Elyria Catholic freshman Alexa Rick took 13th (2:35.81) in the Division II-III 800 meters.
Former Lake Ridge sprinter Kendall Gregory, a Strongsville High senior, won the Division I 400 (48.12) and took third (21.99) in the 200.
Prep track historian Whitmore dies
Craig Whitmore, longtime Ohio track and cross country historian, died March 7 after a long battle with cancer. Whitmore, 71, of Columbus and formerly of Shadyside, died in Bethany Lutheran Village, Centerville.
Whitmore, a longtime fan of track and field in Ohio, served the OATCCC (Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches) as historian, among many other positions over the years.
His passion and relentless work ethic was impressive. Up until the last few years, Whitmore traveled all over the state, either attending many of the statewide meets or researching at local libraries. He frequented Lorain County during that time.
Whitmore authored a book in 2002, “A History of Ohio Track and Field and Cross Country.”
Some of his record lists are included in the publication. For years he tirelessly kept and updated many binders of other record lists for track and cross country which remain invaluable resources to the media, OATCCC and the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Whitmore’s research material dates all the way back to the 1880s. Lorain County was among the first ones in the state to host “field day” back in the late 19th century, according to Whitmore. A “field day” was an early term used for scholastic track meets.
Born Feb. 5, 1937, in Bellaire, he was a 1955 graduate of Shadyside High School, where he was a state qualifier in the
880-yard run.
Whitmore obtained his undergraduate degree at West Liberty State College and his master’s at Bowling Green. He was a retired Ohio public school teacher and coach with the Trotwood-Madison School District and Belmont High School.
