Embattled cop returns to work

northcoastNOW

LORAIN - Police Officer Corey Earl is back on the job.
Lorain Safety Service Director Robert Gilchrist said Earl`s return - which comes after two weeks of paid administrative leave - was OK`d after Police Chief Cel Rivera received a copy of a court order dismissing a civil stalking protection order against Earl.
Thomas Pruitt, a corrections officer at the county jail, dropped the order March 6 without explanation, according to court records.
“We felt comfortable that he could return to duty,” Gilchrist said.
In his initial complaint, Pruitt wrote that Earl had made threats against him to his captain and others, including a police officer.
Rivera has said that the alleged threats were related to Earl`s marital problems and stemmed from an incident last month at Scorchers bar in Lorain. Earl was suspended and his firearm confiscated after the protection order was granted.
Gilchrist said although the completion of an internal investigation by Lorain Police aided in the decision to reinstate Earl, he still faces a predisciplinary hearing with Rivera sometime next week.
If Earl`s conduct warrants administrative charges, Rivera can suspend him for up to three days or recommend a longer suspension or termination to Gilchrist.
Rivera couldn`t be reached Wednesday.
The Sheriff`s Department investigated the allegations against Earl, the findings of which have been forwarded to Elyria Prosecutor Jay Grunda. Grunda said Wednesday he`s still reviewing the case to determine whether charges are warranted.
This is not the first time Earl has had problems.
Before Earl and his wife, Laura, were divorced, Laura Earl obtained a protection order against him after he allegedly threatened to kill himself in front of her.
Corey Earl later was charged with violating that protection order after he had contact with Laura Earl. The charge was dismissed in January because prosecutors doubted the truth of Laura Earl`s allegations.
In addition, Corey Earl was reprimanded late last year for using foul language and discussing his ex-wife when he pulled over the ex-husband of the woman he was dating in November, according to police. Earl was told to stay away from the man and the girlfriend at the time.

This is so scary! This guy is an out of control psycho and he is enforcing laws? He needs to be committed to an asylum and kept away from the public.

Charges were dismissed, end of story. Now that there are other circumstnaces, they need to work them out through the department….not the public

What’s amazing is that these “public officials” allow this stuff to be made public and then they actually publicly comment on these events and/or people…as if this is all normal. I would have fired Corey Earl for emotional instability and for bringing disgrace on the department. But, hey, this is Lorain, the true “Mistake by the lake”.

It seems to me that most of these allegations come from the same group of people. It’s strange to me that the charges are always dropped or dismissed. Could it be that people are lying about Mr. Earl’s behavior? Contrary to what some of you think, Corey Earl is not above the law. If there was a true problem here then the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office would step in and take care of it. I think there is a personal vendetta being waged against Mr. Earl. You people are so quick to attack him from behind your computers. There have been a lot of allegations brought up against Mr. Earl and not one has stodd up. Think about it.

hey regular guy are you crazy or related? Corey is trouble from the word go. Look he left his wife for someone else then he’s got the nerve to dictate her life and harass someone she is seeing? He also harass his girlfriends ex? The real question is how do you respect someone like that, how do you honestly? The reason he gets away with it is because he is protected by the chief along with a few other select few. Money goes along way, not to mention how long after Laura dropped he complaint did she get her divorce? We the citizens of Lorain need to take our city back!!!!! We should be more like Sandusky and investigate the chief and other city officials!!! Chief stop harassing the inocent and get rid of the REAL bad ones.

    I agree with this statement:
I think there is a personal vendetta being waged against Mr. Earl.

I am still waiting for stories on every foreclosure since the Chronicle focused on Mr. Earl’s foreclosure crisis.

Just the fact that he pulled over the ex-husband of a woman he was dating is a major red flag. In a city as big as Lorain? Coincidence? No. Stalker? Yes. And some of you think this is all some kind of vendetta against him? You may have convinced me with that except for the fact has was stupid enough to stalk his girlfriend’s ex while he was on duty. This guy is protecting the citizens of Lorain? Yikes!!!
